1143802 2010-10-12 20:58:00 Once you have pedaled a bike up to speed you don't want to keep on having to stop or slow down and have to gain momentum all over again.

Having to stop and put your feet on the ground to come to a dead stop and then start all over again is energy sapping and wasteful.

options: harden up, take a bus, use cycle lanes, walk etc etc etc

"Having to stop" my car at stop signs is extremly wastefull on petrol & general wear & tear on the car. I should therefore also be able to drive through stop signs, traffic lights & pedestrian crossings, whilst being unlicensed, unregistered & paying no form of road tax

But honestly, no ream harm in cyclists turning LEFT at stops without stopping, IF the way is clear & free of oncoming traffic. It's all the other stuff they do that p8ss's everyone off.
They actually trialed this for cars in Ak a few years back(free left turn on Red lights), the dumb motorist's couldn't figure it out.

Very well said.

1143805 2010-10-12 21:08:00 It seems that cyclist dont need to stop at pedestrian crossings either. They can go through, full speed, on the Left of the stopped cars . Dont worry about the poor pedestrians trying to cross. Who cares if they total a small kid.
They will find a way to blame the cars for this as well.

Don't you just hate it when everyone makes sweeping generalisations!! ;)

The alternative to ignoring the road rules is suddenly becoming very dead - or maimed. Having your energy sapped/wasted is a small price to pay for staying out of hospital, or above ground for a little while longer.

1143806 2010-10-12 21:11:00 Well I guessed why would a cyclist have a difficult time stopping at a stop sign? Over here there are places where you have to stop and make hillstarts.

You make no sense and please grow up. You are not a friendly person arn't you. Sorry I didn't meet your expectations father. Get out of my face, it's a public forum. I think you're an ass, that's just my opinion of you, you and your boy racer attitude. You swore at me. So the same to you too, wtf.

Lmao what are you, 12?

Firstly fix up your damn grammar. You're not a friendly person are not you....CMON that makes no sense.

Secondly, I think anywhere there are hills you will need to make hillstarts - STILL has nothing to do with stop signs.

Third, am I your father or a donkey? Where was my boy racer attitude? Because I don't pull up my handbrake at stop signs - that makes me a boy racer?

And wtf is not really swearing at you, like you said it's a public forum so if you don't like it go back to your hills.

It's better than doing what most cyclists do and try to stay standing and pedaling at red lights, they end up all over the place and sometimes even out into the intersection before it turns green, all because they didn't want to put their feet down.

Another sweeping generalisation...

Performing what is known as a 'track stand' takes a lot of skill - 'most' cyclists do not attempt this.

However, if a cyclist does have this skill, it means he can get away from the red light (and out of the way of the following cars) much quicker, since he doesn't need to worry about clipping in when the lights turn green.

It also means that he has stopped for the red light, by the way!!! Shock!! Horror!!!

And I also often see motor vehicles (of all types) in the intersection when the light is red (I have a window seat on the 15th floor, overlooking a busy Auckland City intersection).

Yeah, car drivers are pretty inconsiderate, & aggro. I guess the car seems like impervious metal Armour allowing all sorts of behavior

Every phase of traffic lights around the CBD will see at least 1 car run the RED at peak times.
Lots of money to be made there if councils put cameras on every traffic light.
