1142569 2010-10-11 10:56:00 Inflation is interesting in so far as when I was going to primary school in 1950 at age 8 or so I used to get 2/- for pocket money per week for which I used to mow the grass and do hedge clipping. My Dad was earning 20 pounds per week. He had a wife who was not working as such but used to take in sewing at times.

I had two younger siblings and they are still alive.

In 1950 I used to go to Saturday matinees and see Roy Rogers etc. For 9 pence you got to see the movie and ice cream and a packet of Jaffas or Aniseed balls etc.

You walked to the Cinema and back.

So my pocket money was 2 shillings per week and there were 20 shillings to a pound and Dad earned 20 pounds per week so go work it out for yourself.

Later I started work and was earning 5 pounds per week in 1958. 5 shillings would get you enough Shark and Spud for our Family of 5. I know as I used to cycle there and back and buy same every now and then.

The last job I had I started in 1996 at $10 per hour and when I left I was on $13.50 in 2009.

A basket of goods that cost $1.00 in the first quarter of 1967 (we decimalised on 10 July 1967), in the third quarter of 2009 dollars would cost a modest $32.61.
At decimalisation, I was on a modest $4,400 as a first year Flt Lt in the RNZAF.
somehow I don't think a Flt Lt on appointment is paid $143,500 exclusive of allowances today.
I didn't know how well off I was.
