2010-10-10 14:45:00 | 'For life' --- why can't they just attempt to come back with a new user-name and start all over again (presumably) with the a new dialog to get them banned again? Do you log the IP of the user's 'puter? Just interested (-- not personally desirous of starting something that might get me banned and need a returning game plan) . I hope youse guys forgot the time I ---- well, never mind!

2010-10-10 19:59:00 | It is IMPOSSIBLE to ban someone from an internet site. You can however find the users and admin on a website get so paranoid over a new user they suspect anyone and end up scaring off any genuine new user from that paranoid belief they know who the new poster is. One website admin was so up themselves they banned IPs left right and centre, they could not understand that not everyone has a static IP it ended up they banned entire providers. Now days with Laptops, wifi, mobile phones etc etc it is practically impossible to completly ban a internet nuisance. Easy way is just ignore and wait for them to get bored...reacting just fuels them.

2010-10-10 20:19:00 | There are ways. mostly they stop after 3-4 bans. depending on what they do you can log a claim with their ISP's abuse department | The Error Guy (14052) | |
2010-10-10 20:33:00 | Exactly. Most ISP's have abuse clauses, though if somebody from the middle of nowhere in the pacific ocean wanted to come on and be a PITA, there's not much we can do to stop them. Proxys are a pain, and we don't resort to IP-banning here. You *can* ban people, but you can't physically stop them re-signing up again, short of having their internet disconnected, but as mentioned that's what cyber cafes etc are for, not to mention NZ's jurisdiction doesn't apply if you're like Joe in the US. It's a hard line to find balance on, but we're always open to feedback :)

2010-10-10 21:03:00 | There are ways. mostly they stop after 3-4 bans. depending on what they do you can log a claim with their ISP's abuse department The amusing part of this is that some forum admin abuse that by making abuse claims in a vindictive manner also. Burden of proof comes up quite a lot these days and its got worse over the last few years as it slowly dawns the internet came be a hostile place. I am going to say this that some people can really be abusive to others on the internet yet get all prissy and defensive when it is pointed out to them and then blame the other person. In the decade or so of being in the cyber world I have seen an been a victim of way to many people who have control of a forum and have used that to abuse. Face it the internet can not be controlled!

2010-10-10 21:27:00 | Yeah I've been a member on a couple of forums over the years where the mods were absolutely anal... So I strive not to be, I know what it's like to be on the receiving end! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2010-10-10 21:31:00 | Seems to me this place is controlled just fine. It is up to the individual to find a place where they are comfortable, they can't expect the entire Internet to be set up to suit them. If people don't like how a certain forum is moderated then they simply go elsewhere, there is no end of options available. :pf1mobmini:

2010-10-10 21:59:00 | My thoughts exactly. We're not forcing users to come here if they dislike the moderation. It's not like they paid for this service ;) Still, without the members, we'd just have chiefs and no indians, therefor no forums...
