| 1184131 | 2011-03-07 03:17:00 | I have a friend who wants a pc to play starcraft 2 on. I have priced out a $1080 + shipping desktop. I would like suggestions on what parts to swap out or replace to lower the cost. The copy of windows can't be removed and a copy of starcraft 2 isn't needed. He wants to run the game at settings above minimum (the pc I priced out should meet recommended). Any ideas? | icow (15313) | ||

Really you are at a point where you can spend $800 for a hunk of rubbish PC marginal for SC2 or $1100 for something half decent, thats really what it boils down too. |

SC2 is a Real time strategy not a FPS, so a HD5770 is "ok" for 1920x1080 or below. www.techspot.com However CPU.... is a bit more hairy as SC2 is "really" only dual threaded very similar to the insane monster CPU hogging Supreme Commander 1 but not as extreme . I5/I7 per clock performance is good where AMD' suffer in SC2. www.techspot.com |

For me personally I wouldn't build a pc for gaming - even on a budget - with less that 4G of RAM and a reasonable graphics card (5770 is probably an ok starting point). Whatever the intention now sometime down the track when someone decides to try and play something else you may regret decisions made now. A useful tip for gaming on a budget - stick to smaller lower res screens and you can get away with slower graphics cards (this is probably obvious to most) a 1080P monitor will not look good if you have to lower the resolution to make a game playable LCD's do not scale well. |
