1145730 2010-10-17 20:37:00 I have a Philips 14" CRT with a strange minor problem. It was used a lot with earphones plugged in and began to develop this fault - no sound unless one touched the headphone output socket - preferably with a wet finger. Then it generally comes right - and a good sound too.
I want to get rid or even sell the thing but feel that this fault should be fixed first - but of course spending $40 or so on it get it fixed when its value to us is zero and anybody else about $6 is daft.
Suggestions or even an explanation for why it does this welcome.
It's about 10 years old.

1145731 2010-10-17 21:06:00 That usually happens when you plug headphones / earphones in and remove it all the time. It used to happen with walkmans. Its probably come loose inside (like a dry joint). All it needs is a bit of solder Speedy Gonzales (78)

Yep - I sort of expected this was the answer to the problem.
Trouble is as far as I can see the bit of solder involves a monster stripping job to get to the thing and then its probably a job for a very skilled person with a tiddly little soldering iron.

Fifty years ago I would have loved the challenge.
I'll probably dump the thing.

It wouldn't even be worth $6. My brother just sold a 25 inch Sony trinitron, in good condition and only 8 years old for $2, as it had a $1 reserve on it. He was a fool for putting a $1 reserve on it, but it did show it's market worth. You would probably be better off buying a second hand one on trademe for a few dollars than getting it repaired.

1145737 2010-10-19 03:09:00 I say try and fix it yourself if you have the time, if you bugger it you've lost nothing. You'll find you can barely give away CRT tvs now. wratterus (105)

This nice little sony 21 inch (3-5 years old) is currently $2.50 www.trademe.co.nz , so people are basically giving them away.
