1185118 2011-03-11 08:36:00 I just bought a Toshiba from Dick Smith's for $699 and couldn't be more happy with it.
I would avoid Acer, my neice bought one and had to get a replacement twice and ended up swapping it for a an HP

1185119 2011-03-11 08:53:00 Always read in pc mags that you should buy the best you can afford therefore suggested Core i5, rather than lower specs. I think mainly browsing stuff, download pics etc. I know it might be overkill but best not to behind technology too much.

While there are elements of truth to that, the thing is you can still *very* happily browse, download photos, check emails, chat, and do desktop publishing on a 2Ghz with 2GB of RAM (Even on Win7).

Going for a Dual-Core 3Ghz i5 would be kind of like spending $75,000 on a V8 Commodore just for when you need to drive down the motorway, when you could get away with $20K on a Barina Spark. Granted off the mark the Commodore would win, but once you're sitting at 100K's, it doesn't matter if the engine tops out at 180K's or 280K's, you're still doing 100 ;)

Personally, I'd save the money. Otherwise, you could put it towards something like a nice mouse, or a quality Wireless Router. :punk

I'm with Nate08, avoid Acer, they're low-cost, low-quality.

ASUS, Toshiba.

Buy HP if you want crap service as an end user.

1185121 2011-03-11 23:12:00 Just don't get HP's Tower-case "Media Center" PC's. They're terrible!! Chilling_Silence (9)
1185122 2011-03-13 09:53:00 Interesting article pctek. Thanks everyone. Will get my friend to read the article but from all your comments, I will recommend at least an I3, 4gb ram, toshiba, Asus, hp but avoid acer. He will have an interesting time comparing the choices. ephesus (2509)
1185123 2011-03-13 21:31:00 Looks like I should suggest Toshiba, HP, Asus, Lenovo in that order for brand reliability . What about Sony?

PS . Not just any Lenovo . Lenovo Thinkpad . That's the corporate line and yes you pay more for it, usually only in laptop specialists or e-stores or directly from them . Lenovo Ideapad is the consumer line up .

But you would have the same with other brands like HP/Tosh . All that stuff you see at DSE is the consumer range . Tosh Satelitte is the consumer range . I think the corporate is Portege or something . . . You may pay $2k or $3k min depending which corporate brand you are after . If you want them v thin as well, the ones a business traveller uses and you have them well spec'd NZ can charge $8k .

Toshiba, Lenovo and HP have their consumer and corporate lines . If bulletproof enterprise reliability is critical for you, then what you want will not be available in stores;
Lenovo Thinkpad (as Nomad said)
Toshiba Tecra, Satellite Pro and Portege . Satellite/Qosmio is the consumer line
HP Elitebook and to a lesser extent Probook . Compaq/Presario/Pavilion is the consumer line

ASUS, Toshiba .

Buy HP if you want crap service as an end user .

HP's support for enterprise products (even if its for a consumer and not an actual IT department) is just as good as any other, for example next day advance replacement . That has been my personal experience anyway .

1185124 2011-03-13 21:38:00 HP's support for enterprise products is just as good as any other,

Tough luck if you're just an end user ay.

1185125 2011-03-13 22:14:00 Yeah their enterprise is great. End-user sucks. Good thing we have PF1 in case of an emergency, and warranties for everything else! Chilling_Silence (9)
1185126 2011-03-13 22:20:00 I meant if you purchased it for your own personal use, you still get treated as an enterprise user. utopian201 (6245)
