1184053 2011-03-07 04:55:00 I'll make a deal with you.

Tell me which version of Windows you are running as I already asked you to do and then I will tell you how to get the on screen keyboard.

You can get around the "d" thing as I already told you as well. Type Alt and hold down then type 100 on the number keyboard!!!

It's like getting blood out of a stone sometimes.

alt 100 doesn't work everywhere, XP is the O/S thought I'd already said that, but no i haven't.

Anyway the machine shut down during memtest+, not sure why as it happened when i left the room for a minute, so i looked at the ram physically (don't like opening up other peoples computers, until I have tried other things first), one of the clips was under the memory chip instead of over it, removed ram and then put it back in correctly

Rebooted the machine, came up with no errors and booted into windows, so i installed all the missing drivers, (network, display, wireless, etc) rebooted again.

everythings still working sweet,

left the computer open in a browser

went for dinner and there is an error

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

blabla bla

Stop: 0x0000000a (0xf79510b0,0x00000002,0x00000001,0x804d9f6c)

bla bla bla

(will rerun memtest+ shortly)

1184055 2011-03-07 05:10:00 Reboot. There is probably a hardware issue. See here for more info (technet.microsoft.com)

As for the 'D' issue, if you press really hard on the surface where it used to be then it should work

EDIT:
It could be a driver or RAM issue.

It won't, the conductive membrane thingie is completely missing and that key, its just circuit board.

the alt 100 thing works on my machine, but didn't seem to work on the laptop, mind you judging by the crud thats fallen out of the keypad just now it may work when i next test it.

1184058 2011-03-07 05:27:00 How hard would it be to replace the keypad as there is a cheapie (www.trademe.co.nz)on trademe, although that trademe does have a weird grey button in the middle of it.

Yeah i know fix the computer first.

1184059 2011-03-07 05:39:00 How many passes should i let memtest+ do, its done one with no errors.

I have been reading some people say 32 (it took 26 mins to do the 1st one), others say 6 should show anything up

1184060 2011-03-07 05:48:00 24 hours if you want a good guarantee that the machine is stable.

However since the error message disappeared after the RAM was plugged back in properly the BSOD you are getting may be caused by something else (in fact possibly due to file corruption caused by the mis-inserted and no doubt improperly working RAM module)

Then again the RAM or motherboard may have been damaged when the RAM was partially inserted.

If memtest shows up no errors after 6 passes, but you are still getting that BSOD error, try a known working stick of RAM. If that doesn't help start looking at a software cause of the error.

1184061 2011-03-07 05:52:00 PS: My own Toshiba laptop was throwing random BSOD constantly, but the RAM tested perfectly with Memtest.

Replaced both sticks of RAM anyway and not a BSOD since (except one which I know 100% was caused by software)

After this I believe that it is possible for Memtest to appear to pass a faulty module. However that is the only time I've ever seen it. Maybe an isolated incident, maybe a bug in Memtest which has since been fixed. I didn't pursue further, was glad to get everything working again.

1184062 2011-03-07 06:25:00 The grey thing in the middle of it is called a pointing stick (more info here (en.wikipedia.org)).
You should check if the board is the right model as boards with pointing sticks often have different connectors
