1145761 2010-10-18 01:06:00 Chilling_Silence even with the privacy setting set to custom and full on privacy (which defeats the object of sharing with real friends) there are still issues.

How secure is the information? From what I heard recently they changed settings and suddenly everyone found themselves open to the public. Thats just not on either.

Problem I found was a common interest page. Thats where the stalking was noticeable and I actually did create a dummy profile to keep my privacy. Like speedy said some are just plain nosey and a lot of shall we call baiting was going on. Funny thing you can always tell the losers when they start calling names, swearing etc.

You also then notice how the negative focuses seem to play on anything thats critical or questioning. Human nature or just the kiwi way? What makes me laugh is these people making out how they know you. I did notice though a pattern once the ganging up started! All of them had friends in common connected with the page owner.

Pathetic really so a reason to steer clear from facebook when targetting like that happens, a bit upsetting really not being able to share a common interest with others who do feel the same way when you get ambushed by tossers.

1145762 2010-10-18 01:11:00 Yup, and most of these social networking sites are also used for malware (esp Facebook) .

Since, a lot of people visit them, a hacker would have a field day . One reason I dont use any of them . And all of them are too nosy . They want too much info
Yup, but from the perspective of someone being computer literate, recognising malicious links and promoting malware download is easy .

I had looked at facebook but decided not to join . They want far too much information about you . Have heard of people getting heaps of friend requests from people they don't even know .
Which you can decide not to provide . Heck, you can even provide a fake Facebook name (and not display your real name) .

Friend requests - can be simply denied .

That has to do with where you are going within facebook etc . . . . for simple contact with friends the world over, it cant be beaten!

1145764 2010-10-18 01:29:00 *sigh*

If you are so paranoid about the thought that someone somewhere may access your personal info, then don't post it on the internet and stop complaining about sites such as Facebook.

If the mere thought of someone you don't know requesting a friendship with you via Facebook turns you cold then bugger off and quit your moaning.

I do not use the site much, but for what its worth its great. Keep it simple, don't include stupid information (address, phone numbers, DoB etc) and use it for what its made for.

What it is great for is keeping up-to-date with the little bits of interesting info about your friends that you don't necessarily email every week. I'm not talking about the "OMG its raining today" type twitter nuts, the more "Got a new job/house/pc" type.

1145765 2010-10-18 01:42:00 yeah, sometimes i found so many bad ads on facebook that i dislike them. faith1806 (15972)
1145766 2010-10-18 01:53:00 I can find out more information about you just by driving down the street, taking down your number plate, then doing a little dumpster-diving outside your house. Online identity fraud is much more difficult than any other kind, so you've really got far less to worry about. It's much easier to steal your identity or stalk you in real-life than it is online...

Sure, it's possible, but you've got much more important and much more likely threats in your life to worry about...

1145767 2010-10-18 07:36:00 I just prefer my modest amount of anonymity and so don't use facebook or any of the other so called social networking sites. All of my real friends know this so don't bombard me with requests to join and so any requests I do get are deleted. It's not because I'm afraid of identity theft I just like it this way gary67 (56)
1145768 2010-10-18 08:32:00 Your still missing what I was on about.

Sussed out all the protocols just not the one that says never under estimate a malicous ****** or two who thinks they are better than you. The ones that use public pages to broadcast to the world about you.

Unfortunantely I found just such a webpage.

1145769 2010-10-18 08:54:00 I don't use Facebook, main reason is that I doubt I'd ever do anything with it. Anyone I talk to I can already see in real life (TM), or on MSN messenger. Agent_24 (57)
1145770 2010-10-18 08:56:00 That and there's nothing saying it has to be public.
Same for your profile, change it to private so people can't see diddly squat about your life. Problem solved.

Exactly. Also, facebook can send my detail to whoever the hell they want, I don't put anything that I don't want people to see. Set your settings to private, and don't post anything you wouldn't want your mum to see.
