1145564 2010-10-17 06:00:00 Not really hard to find a chinese person - go into your local chinese grocery or something and do your entire order in whichever chinese language you are learning. And then ask them how they are and all that too.

When my son learned Japanese you used to go up to tourists and test his skills, they were always pleased and helpful.

As for the list of ancestry - my mother is Hungarian, my father came from England but his ancestors came from France and Flanders mostly.......I can't speak Flemish or Hungarian, well except for bits of it, mostly food.

1145568 2010-10-17 08:26:00 Yeah, am a Chinese Kiwi. I still retain a lot of my Chinese aspects though. My accent for example, some view points etc. Some Asian Kiwis want to lose their accent but really they're just trying hard to be something they're not. I'm not fussed about my accent, which can apparently just 'disappear' or be as heavy as to require me to repeat what I say several times. :S

I got away with living in Australia for some years and was not ACCUSSED of being a Kiwi.

Way back when I used to go to the Chinese Market gardens and buy veges when I was about 9 or 10. At that time I used to go to school with Maori, Chinese and Pakeha and we never put Labels on each other apart from the Teachers and Bullies.

It is true to say that there are a number of people that will never be invited into my home but it's never been based on skin colour but more rejecting Crims and/or Salespeople etc.
