1186237 2011-03-15 06:28:00 I have been trying out the new Internet Explorer 9. It is still the clunky Browser it has been since version 6.

1. On a page 960px wide (as shown by Fire Fox, Opera and Chrome) is displayed at 1200px and looks terrible.
2. There is still no setting for choosing the Download folder.
3. When you press F11 to return from full page it still half minimizes, you then have to select the square to normalize the display.

All they have done is put a depressing interface at the top, like Fire Fox 4, dark and lacking contrast.

1186238 2011-03-15 06:34:00 So don't use it then. Or did you not think of that?
1. Which page in particular?
2. You can save or save as. If you save as you can put the download where you want. Or did you not notice the box at the bottom of the page?
3. F11 works here.

1186239 2011-03-15 06:46:00 You can select the download folder under tools / view downloads. Click on options. Are you using the RTM now that its been released? Speedy Gonzales (78)

1186241 2011-03-15 09:23:00 Mzee, I'm also interested in which site is looking odd? Have you tried turning compatibility mode on/off (the button the looks like a broken page in the address bar)?

For the contrast, that sounds like you have a dark Windows theme set since IE9 just takes the colour from there, you can change it to something lighter by right-clicking on the Windows Desktop, choosing Personalise, and then Window Colour.

If you want to try out some fun stuff with IE9 have a look at what it can do here ... snap it side by side with another browser of your choice.
ie.microsoft.com

My personal favourite because it just looks good is the FishIE Tank:
ie.microsoft.com

A few things I'm finding useful:
1) Pin any sites like Facebook or Hotmail with an https:// address (note the s). Keeps you a little safer.
2) If you don't like ads, add some the main ad networks to the Restricted security zone, half a dozen sites there and it gets rid of 95% of ads. Actually you've been able to do this for a long time.
3) For the sake of privacy, bolster that with the EASY List tracking protection list (Ed Bott says this is the same filter as AdBlock Plus):
ie.microsoft.com

One more thing I've done is download the new Speckie spell checker for IE9:
www.speckie.com

cheers

Just installed IE 9 here, and its certainly a lot faster than the older versions .

Re your points - What site is terrible on your PC ? I just tried the link waldok posted with the fish test :D the only time my crappy old 9600GSO card even thinks about straining is when I load up 1000 fish, even then it still scores at 54 out of 60 FPS .

re the "no setting for choosing the Download folder" -- Didn't look to hard eh!

Open IE - Tools- View Downloads - Bottom left is Options - click that - and you can change the default location . Edited: oops didn't see trevs reply on this one :o

F11 also works perfectly . F11 goes to full screen, pressing F11 again brings it back to normal .

1186243 2011-03-15 21:38:00 Looks to me like another person who wants to change my browser of choice.

And IE IS my browser of choice not because I don't know there are alternatives. It's more because it works for me and I see no real advantage in changing. I have tried alternatives and I do check out the sites I manage with the alternatives.

I checked the complaints the OP had but as yet he/she has not come back with a link to the page that looked horrible under IE but looked good in an alternative browser.

1186244 2011-03-15 22:06:00 I was a bit previous with my comments!

The screen width is only wrong on my desk top, comes right after selecting the "broken page" icon. The F11 problem is also on the desk top. Probably due to its age!

My Dell Vostro lap-top has no problems with it.

OK. And thanks for the update on what was wrong with the experience you had on one of your rigs.

Some of those tests don't work for me. The fish tank I just get a white screen and the galactic demo I just get a black screen with sound. The Kung Fu game doesn't work either. Think I might have a Java problem as my home page Actrix comes up with a Java script error. When using Firefox I get no Java errors. Got the latest Java.
:(
The fishtank works in Firefox and the Kung Fu game sort of works. The Galactic one doesn't work in FF not even any sound. Just get messages to upgrade to IE9.
