1146875 2010-10-22 01:22:00 This week a fairly bright comet (www.space.com) is visible in the northeastern sky and makes its closest approach to Earth tonight (Oct. 21st), though it may be difficult to spot without clear conditions well away from city lights.

For a few nights at mid-week, Comet 103P/Hartley 2 (www.space.com) will be perfectly placed in the bright circle of stars that form the constellation Capella.

This sky map (www.space.com +Hartley+2+during+its+closest+approach+to+Earth+in +October+2010.+The+comet+makes+its+closest+pass+by +Earth+on+Oct.+20%2C+when+it+will+be+framed+by+the +bright+stars+of+Auriga+in+the+Capella+constellati on.+Credit%3A+Starry+Night.+[%3Ca+href%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fspacewatc h%2Fcomet-hartley-2-passing-earth-101019.html%3EFull+Story%3C%2Fa%3E]) shows where to look to spot the comet, weather and lighting conditions permitting. Binoculars or a small telescope are advised to obtain the best viewing conditions.

1146876 2010-10-22 02:11:00 Could be a bit tricky standing this close to that pile of kryptonite over there - my x-ray vision probably won't penetrate 12000-odd kilometres of material.... johcar (6283)

1146880 2010-10-22 03:54:00 Haven't seen much sun lately, but I vaguely recall that we do have one... johcar (6283)

Well, yes, but the Moon is upside down, and if you face in the direction of the noonday sun, then east is on your right hand, and west is on your left

Edit: Runner Beans also climb up the poles with an opposite hand twist to the Northern hemisphere, presumably on the equator they just grow straight up :)

1146882 2010-10-22 04:20:00 I refuse to view any comet that requires optical aids. Until they can provide a decent cometary event that observers can hear, as well as see, I will look the other way.
We had better comets in my younger days ;).

Yes they rise at 22-15. I have been an amateur astronomer for about 40 years.
