| 1146413 | 2010-10-25 23:34:00 | Tokenism - Perhaps many NZ's don't realize any significance that hundreds of our cities/towns are named in Maori . Probably spoken/referenced everyday . Similar to British and Irish cities/regions . Perhaps their citizens might have pride in any significance of their meanings, and might have a deeper insight in their heritage and language . If a foreigner (e . g . an American) asks a New Zealander (as in any race) what does "Tauranga" or "Taranaki" mean? How would a NZ citizen reply? Should it's meaning be explained? Would it be irrelevant? Surely early generation NZ's might want to identify with their home town, even if it has a Maori name . . . meaning a bit of language/history research . |

I would tell my son he did not have to attend these classes. F**k the government and f**k the compulsory aspect.
