But they don't seem to speak (or is apparent in public) their own language, as they too may have lost/or not learnt their language (e.g. Gaelic), assuming if they ever had it. I know a few Irish young that cam speak Gaelic and are proud of it. |

Is the Maori Language relevant in the 21st century? - If you think so, stop kidding yourself - a small very minority speak it in a small South Pacific country, that is far removed from the rest of the world - This isolation is not necessarily a bad thing, but really NZ has never been and never will be one of the movers and shakers( other than for earthquakes) in the world. Let those who want to learn to speak Maori learn it in their own time - Do not force it on young European and Asian New Zealanders, for whom in the majority, it is of no interest, no value and no relevance. Educational standards in New Zealand in the subjects that really count are nothing to be proud of - We should be stressing higher levels of competency in English, Mathematics and the Sciences if we want our education system to really benefit the country, and prepare our young people for living and working in the 21st century. As a nation, We have one of the lowest levels of paticipation in university education in the modern world. |

I accept that a lot of older Maori do have bronchial issues, but I've heard it from much younger maori as well. Personally I think it is an affectation by younger speakers, and is done for effect by those who want to emulate the gravitas of their elders. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 1146377 | 2010-10-23 23:33:00 | In reality, it will not truly die, fluent Maori Language speakers will become rare. But then it might become really useful as with the Navajo Codetalkers (www.essortment.com)!! (read down a bit in the link to see how many fluent native talkers were left - the oral language bit resonates). And you talk about language changing... Back in the 1800's converting the Maori language to a written one was a prime chance to "tidy up" the rather esoteric (I use the term loosely) mess that had arisen from Britain being invaded so often.... so what did they do? - "wh" replaces a straightforward "eff" sound - where did that come from? Then there were was the concept of the macron.....I dispair!! |

Well it would be nice if something useful came from that quarter. |
