1146885 2010-10-22 04:43:00 Well, yes, but the Moon is upside down...

1146886 2010-10-22 04:44:00 Youse guys can't see The Pleiades?

At the right time of the year we can. The first sign of Matariki (The Pleiades) is the Māori New Year, because it marked kumara planting time.

1146887 2010-10-22 04:56:00 Until they can provide a decent cometary event that observers can hear, as well as see, I will look the other way. We had better comets in my younger days ;).

I heard that you could actually see flames as they passed over the surface of the earth; or failed to pass over, in some cases. :xmouth:

But SJ may not know about those.

Cheers

1146888 2010-10-22 04:56:00 Yes they rise at 22-15. I have been an amateur astronomer for about 40 years.
:)
I stand corrected, but I go to bed early these days...........

I thought you could smell the burning cordite as they whizzed over

1146890 2010-10-22 08:03:00 Cr@p! Everything's upside-down. No wonder youse guys can't see it.

Ya get a moon and a sun too, right?

Actually, no, I don't.

Being a computer nerd I don't see much sun at all.

And work... a windowless room with the lights mostly off!

Absolutely correct. If it was a REALLY good comet there would be a faint aroma of brimstone for a phew days, to the great delight of homesick Rotoruaians. It may have scared a few horses, but it usually assured a day off school as the mentor rushed off to placate the spirits.
