1187674 2011-03-20 07:37:00 Bit over a year ago I put two 1.5TB HDDs into a plastic box and put it in off-site storage, using some crystal kitty litter as desiccant. I checked on it today. The drives were fine but some paper in the box (Explorer screen shots) were less than totally dry - perhaps 3 on a 1 to 5 scale of dryness. The silica had increased in weight by 0.9g.

Has anyone else had experience of this? Should I have crushed the crystals? What increase in weight should I expect? The box volume was equal to 3 x 3.5" drives. The storage location was outside but not exposed to rain (think garden shed)

Why not secret the drives in the hot water cupboard?
