1186876 2011-03-17 04:54:00 Just put a new 2gb stick or ram in my lappy (after rounding a screw and having to go through alot of trouble to swivel the panel around the damn thing)
and it shows up fine as 4096mb in the bios but windows 7 says only 3.86 of the 4 gb (it recognises it's there) is usable.
I find it odd that this is only present since I've stuck the extra ram in. Previously had 2gb.

any ideas?

Also, one dedicated gfx card (5470) with 512mb ram on its own, and I have 64 bit win 7 so can't be nicked by any integrated chips.

1186877 2011-03-17 05:01:00 See if theres a memory remap option in the BIOS. If its disabled, enable it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1186878 2011-03-17 05:21:00 Nope, bios on this baby is ultra basic. Pretty much has quiet boot, network boot, boot order and set a password. Oh and ahci mode.

So yeah nothing to do with sheep.

1186881 2011-03-17 05:27:00 Another issue I can think of is them being unmatched speeds, one's a samsung 1066 and the other's a hynix strontium 1333.
Not sure how that'd affect usable ram though.

Unless it is as the internet suggests, and windows is reserving some for my hardware use.

edit - esp. since speed should be scalable. (to the first point)

1186882 2011-03-17 05:30:00 A model might help. Or is gateway one the model? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1186883 2011-03-17 05:32:00 model of the laptop? I'll pull it up, hang on. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1186884 2011-03-17 05:34:00 oh got it
turns out it IS the graphics card stealing the memory.

Bleargh.
I pulled the page up a few days ago to check the ram speed and max capacity, but didn't notice that till just then.

1186885 2011-03-17 05:35:00 ok then, new question. How do I stop my 5470 being a bastard and ripping off my memory when I don't want it to? 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
