| 1148162 | 2010-10-27 16:13:00 | Sesame Street Tweet Sparks Rumors That Bert Is Out of the Closet (www.foxnews.com) I knew it! I DID!!! :horrified He's lived with a man for 31 years and wears turtlenecks and saddle shoes, and rumors of his homosexuality have swirled for years. But no one's ever heard directly from Sesame Street's Bert on his sexuality, until now sort of. On June 11, the famous puppet tweeted about the recent "A-Team" remake by comparing himself to A-Team star Mr-T, saying, "Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo,'* a little less 'hawk.'" * MO ~ street-slang for 'homo' or homosexual. |

| 1148163 | 2010-10-27 19:54:00 | And in a sensible world, we should be able to laugh off that statement. However, it's a world full of cranks who stand at each end of the gay divide and each side tries to yank the public perceptions to their side of the debate. Case in point... Noddy and BigEars - two childrens book characters. They were friends. They'd spend their days together, and at times they'd innocently share a bed at night time - the result - a ban on the Noddy books. Instead we should ban the noddys who caused that ban! If Noddy were to share a bed with a female character would we have to assume sexual context as well? If Noddy shared his bed with Golliwog (another PC stumbleblock) would Noddy then be championed or criticised for interratial sex? Given all the buggering that genuinely goes on inside the Catholic church in real life, perhaps we should ban catholicism! Which one is more likely to corrupt or harm a child? Enid Blytons story books, or a pedophile preist? Farewell Bert and Ernie. It was nice knowing you. How long until we lose Spongebob to some ranting PC group of nutters? |

(snip) It was a bit more complicated than that, and it wasn't just her Noddy books. I was first aware of libraries deciding not to buy and stock Enid Blyton books many years ago because of their limitations in terms of quality children's literature. Why spend money on that crap when there was a ton of better books around, was the argument. Only later did the discussions start about gender and racial issues. I never heard anything about the books being banned because Noddy and Big Ears shared a bed - I think that is a myth that grew up with the anti PC people. Wikipedia has a reasonable summary of the reasons for criticism or banning of her books - en.wikipedia.org |

My Pommy son in law told me the story a few years ago as gospel truth. He firmly believed it as you did. We still have the Pugwash books in our kids' library, so I went and checked, he was so convinced. No evidence there of course. So I did the internet search and found the Snopes refutation of this urban legend. See url above. |
