1149108 2010-11-05 02:48:00 You could have a look at this one ... but have no idea whether it would be suitable. There's a trial version and options to purchase, including a very good educational package.

Got a copy of it somewhere but regard it as too complex. I believe it is quite popular in the commercial field.

1149109 2010-11-05 02:58:00 Hi Thomas01,
I too have a copy of Turdocad as a cupboard resident. :badpc:
If you get Win7 as your next OS, go for the Professional version so you can install XP (free!) in a virtual machine allowing DCWin to run happily. This greatly enhances Win7. The Virtual machine I am using in Win7 Home ???? does not access printers via the USB port, and a non-printing CAD program is about as much use as a telescope with no hole up the middle - or Win Vista.
I have very briefly tried DraftSight, a free 2D program from Dassault, who are a pretty practical mob (for Europeans). It can be downloaded here (www.3ds.com)
Here (www.youtube.com) is a simple tutorial, it was more or less this function I used it for in the only two times I have used it, quickly changing a dimensioned back-of-an-envelope sketch to a reasonably tidy drawing.
It did what I wanted PDQly, but I haven't even paused to check for symbols yet. I could not find a Bezier function yet, which was another DCWin strength. It may well be there, I hope so.
If you try it, could you let me know your impressions as a keen DC user?

Well I tried to get Draftsight and ran into a lot of problems. Their website flopped all over my screen for some reason - not had this with any other website and when eventually I got the program downloaded it took a few attempts to get it installed. But eventually it reported the installation successful and I tried to use it. But I have absolutely no control over the cursor which wanders all over the screen - again this is a new problem I have not had before.
So No joy.
I have continued to try to learn TurboCad and made better progress since I decided to use it as a learning exercise (at 78 I need some mental stimulation), but it does seem an awful mess - anybody familiar with the program and its strange way of operating has a very good clever convenient fast program.
But designed by committee!
Whereas I get the impression DCWIN was done by a very small team who kept good control.
I do have a small drafting job to do and I really must accept that I can finish it in a day or so with DCWIN and probably a month or so in TurboCad.
But that's life.

Yep - and I can still catch the slower ones.
Just wish I could remember what one is supposed to do with them.

I think the correct answer is NO.
But I use Adobe Photoshop Elements2 to mess about with photographs - muck em about a bit - mix art work with photos and put a photo of my wife when she was sixteen stood by our last car recently.
I also use it to make our Christmas cards - etc.
There is a learning curve which I managed without too much bother.
But hardly what I would call manipulating pictures of animals.

I have tried various forums for Turbocad and most seem as difficult to understand as the program itself.
But this link is better - more like I am used to in PC World Forums.
And the threads were interesting too.
I was pleased to see I am not the only one utterly puzzled by the program and the way it functions.
Anyway thanks for the link.
I am beginning to get the hang of it TC now.
I found my DCWIN on my laptop will only produce a very distorted picture - not at all what I want so I guess the sooner I get the hang of TC the better.

1149116 2010-11-05 22:24:00 There is also a forum for open source software but it is more CAM orientated.
Might be worth a look.
