I've scraped the surface of the topics which I mentioned above, and have really focused what discrimination is in the 21st century. Speech will be about 6-7min at the most. Also, I have tried to focus mainly on Maori's in New Zealand and African Americans oversees. I also briefly discussed racial stereotypes and tried to link that together with the change in discrimination. It really just scratches the surface. Cheers for the links, they made for interesting reading. Although many people tend not to hire people with Asian names, mainly because of their accent and it does pose difficulties in the workplace. But in saying that, their actual understanding of the English language is probably much better than many Maoris in New Zealand. Not being racist here, but the illiteracy rate of Maoris is much higher than pakehas (HATE using that word, I refuse to be called a white devil, especially on government forms). Good example of this is Chris Kahui struggling to read properly in court. |

The shellfish still have to be over the legal size limit, and, IIRC, they can only be for communal use, ex; the nibbles at a meeting, not for personal use. Still, what it boils down to, is that if a white fella and a maori fella are both collecting shellfish, the maori guy is allowed more than the white fella. 4 minutes isn't nearly enough TBH. If I'm giving a speech on a subject I really, really like, it's way too easy to go over time. Think half-hour limit, over by 15. |

As a third party observer (in terms of race) I don't think that's a problem. Maybe if they were allowed to take more for personal consumption is when the line is crossed, but if it's for communal and cultural get-together-bunch-of-people consumption it's alright. On the assumption the amount they are taking is sustainable, of course. |

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from, but, whitey can't take a few extra for his mates back home, whereas darkie can. Also, if the daily limit for one type is, say, 10, and he's collecting for a total of 10 people, he's not limited to 100, he could take 200, allowing everyone more than double their daily limit. How is that fair? |

Well, whities weren't the first people of New Zealand who before Europeans came got together as a tribe and feasted as a tribe on shellfish, game and harvest. I'm against taxpayer dollars being spent on an obsolete language, but the Maori should have a right to continue cultural practices like eating shellfish as a tribe as long as their catch is sustainable. |

| 1149135 | 2010-10-31 11:24:00 | I don't really see how taking an unlimited amount of shellfish is sustainable, even if it is over-size. If the laws weren't there, quite a few species would go the way of the moa. Doesn't help that a lot of size-limits are ignored. Not really my point though... |

| 1149136 | 2010-10-31 11:30:00 | Nah, I'm sure DoC knows what they're doing. It's not like they'll be collecting ALL the shellfish they can find, and there are size restrictions. Can't compare shellfish and moa, their reproduction rates are way different, and if moa were still alive today they will certainly be a fiercely protected species. | qazwsxokmijn (102) | ||
