1188207 2011-03-21 23:05:00 Having problems starting up in XP. If I shut down without turning the power off at the wall, restarts go thru the motions right up to the black screen before the welcome before stalling. Switching power off to recover brings up the error type page outlining the 5 options to restart, however the arrow keys to make a selection don't work, leaving me with the bottom option, normal start.

Sometimes this works, sometimes it's necessary to power off completely and this seems to help with the next restart attempt.

The computer is otherwise working perfectly except that System Restore won't work. I have MSSE and the usual CCleaner, Malware stuff, all which report a clean machine.

A couple of nights ago on shutting down, there was a MS automatic update which I allowed to load. These problems began the next morning.

Any thoughts....at least it's still running normally provided I switch off completely as described,

1188208 2011-03-22 00:44:00 Does the keyboard work in the bios? During a normal startup are you able to use f8 to boot into safe mode etc? Try uninstalling the updates or using system restore, if that helps, re-apply the updates to see if the problem was simply a bad update installation

1188210 2011-03-22 00:58:00 Thanks for that - I can get F8 but cannot select any of the options and need to power off to get out of it. Start-up from power off works and gets me back.

See above, System Restore is not working. It loads about 90% then I get the error report stating it can't restore me to the selected date. I have tried about 10 others selected dates without success.

1188211 2011-03-22 01:07:00 Can you access the bios during startup? Try del or f10. What model computer/ motherboard is it? Is the keyboard usb or ps/2?

1188213 2011-03-22 01:53:00 In the BIOS there may be an option similar to "enable USB legacy support" this can help with USB keyboards during startup or outside of windows.

Sometimes though it's good to have an old ps2 keyboard around to use when you're having problems.

Found that and enabled it. This has enabled the keyboard and after selecting "Use the last good configuration" option, I have started the system twice without having to resort to the "power off" method. It's early days yet but looks like we may be on a winner here. Thanks for that....
