That's pretty much my recollection. I suspect these days the materials have improved so that there is no need to differentiate. I posed the question because in a packet of washers there are normally two different colours, and I wondered why.

1461664 2019-06-20 03:03:00 Husband said you can get different ones, the hot can be a thinner one, cause people turn tap off too hard and stuff them, or some such thing. (So shouldn't it be a thicker one - whatever)

But it doesn't actually matter.

1461665 2019-06-20 03:35:00 In my collection there are red, blue and black washers. I always use red for hot and blue for cold but they all appear identical apart from the colour. Just as an aside I recently found that a whole new tap was just about as cheap as a repair kit for my outside hose tap at the local Mitre 10 store. CliveM (6007)

Yes.
That's why we changed the shower mixer.

Trade $91 for a new cartridge. Retail $150.

New mixer $99. Both Methven.

So...why bother, the old mixer was a bit manky anyway, and had been installed incorrectly (handle/grub screw part), so it was less hassle anyway.

Not uncommon actually.

Could have got an even cheaper mixer, but no, better to stick to the good brands, not the cheap junk

Methven, mighty fine New Zealand company. I used to work on both of their Swiss tap casting machines, however some taps and valves come from communist china and are packaged as Methven

So?
Everything almost is made in China.
Made BY China is what you worry about, not made IN.

Aah, but I remember the days when anything from Japan was called Jap Crap. Look at Japanese technology and quality now. Equal too or better than most manufacturing countries in the world. China will do the same.
