Most ISPs ask you which plan you want.

A lot of ISP's try and sell you the base package as it is cheaper and they want to get your dollars, only later when you find out speed isn't great they tell you about higher more expensive plans. It is all marketing hype to get you onboard. Doesn'tmatter to us as we can only get adsl or 4G anyway, so went with 4G which is surprisingly good.

1461097 2019-06-01 23:42:00 It is what's happening PJ. My 90yr old neighbour has just had Spark change his phones (doesn't have internet) over to a modem (4g I think) He says to me they don't work, so off I go to sort him out.

I find modem, base unit and 2nd phone all switched off at the wall. Switched them all on and see that there is no life in batteries at all. I asked and he said he turned them all off after Spark left. Told him not to turn any of them off, then rang his daughter who said he turns everything off at the wall.

Went home and got a roll of masking tape and then put tape over the switches so he couldn't turn them off. Hope that works. :)

1461099 2019-06-02 00:47:00 Not really that hilarious, just common sense, my parents taught me to do this, in the old days when electricity and electrical appliances were coming into vogue it didn't pay to leave things unattended in case there was a fault and they caught on fire.

Lightning strike can also be a big problem in some places.

When I leave my unit I always leave as much as possible switched off including the stove, washing machine, computer, dehumidifier and any heaters.

Most ISPs ask you which plan you want. Basically every one that's door knocks.

They rarely, unless asked give different plan options. Usually its along the lines of you have Fibre outside -------- etc. Even the online, by default they usually offer the lower priced, very few offer top end right off the bat, you need to add this, upgrade that. Most people look at the Price, and dont bother about what they are actually getting, hence the complaints.

Take Stuff Fibre - The default, with out all the extras / increases.

Door knocks?
Oh yeah, I vaguely remember people used to get that sort of thing.

If they signed up on the basis of a door knock, well I have an investment they may like. LOL.

Comparing price, plan and most of all, customer service is what the sensible would do.

Lightning that has swiftly leapt with a single bound from a many, many metres distant cloud to the power lines is unlikely to be much bothered by the 2 or 3 mm gap in a power switch. :badpc: ;)

you might be surprised.

tho more common was the amount of power spikes which fried plenty of electronics. i used to fix a lot of farmers appliances, especial those from certain areas with poor quality power.
some of the houses i worked on that had been hit by lightning it was surprising what survived. often it was due to lightning go down an easier path. if a switch is off and there is an easy path through something else, the appliance is often not hit.

one of the issues was a spike would be dealt with by the onboard MOV. but they would change the fuse and leave the damaged MOV in place. next spike blew tracks off the board.

1461105 2019-06-23 11:39:00 I Am Curious. ADSL or VDSL(?) versus Fibre. I see on the Forum various figures of up/down speed comparisons. But in real time wou;d we notice a difference on the screen? For instance, Take a large paragraph of text sent over Copper or Fiber would we notice the Send speed? in what, Milleseconds, blink of an eye. Another for instance, to send that text over copper & fiber from Wanganui to say London would we see any difference The fibre speed is claimed to save us, buisnes, the country millions of dollars & is vital for our economy!! How?
OR have I got the wrong ideas about all the above. Thanks PJ

I think a really high speed connection would save Peter Jackson and Rocket Lab quite a bit of time and quite a few dollars.
