1461302 2019-06-07 23:30:00 Any Hawkes Bay recommended mechanics? piroska (17583)
1461303 2019-06-08 02:29:00 Yes, Neil at Bay City Motors, Onekawa 06-8432103

He has been looking after our fleet at Colenso school for the last 8 years. The do an excellent job at a reasonable cost.

1461304 2019-06-08 03:09:00 Thanks.
They do WOFs? Doesn't seem to, from their couple of ads.
Then again that may be a good thing.

I will not go to VTNZ. Thinking of maybe just going to Toyota, it's due next month.
Had too many liar mechanics to just pick one at random, repairs or wofs....

Applies to Auckland, too. Had bad experiences with Toyota, Botany, and many others in the area. :(

1461307 2019-06-08 04:39:00 For what it's worth ... I was in the fleet maintenance business for a time, and during that time I appointed around 75 garages to carry out our scheduled and non sched maintenance. One criterion I applied, one that saw me through and only ever bit me once or twice, was a non-technical appraisal of the workshop, the front office, and customer reception.

If the premises were clean, tidy, well laid out etc, that garage got the contract. If the (as i said, non-technical) appraisal measured up, it invariably spoke to me of good management, pride in their work and the company itself. All of which translated to quality work. If the premises looked like a black hole of Calcutta, they never got past an exchange of business cards.

Dead right there squire, same with hiring people. Look at the car they came in has it got a current WOF, rego look on the floor and seats for clothes and empty alcohol containers. Look for drug paraphernalia. Tattoos, rings in places other than fingers, Jim Beam or Harley D etc appareil . Any mention of the word ex, WINZ and kids.

1461310 2019-06-08 22:00:00 Clean and tidy hasn't worked with us.
Example, timing was out, husband no longer has a timing light so one day, annoyed with it, I stopped on way home.
First 4 garages, including the recommended one, had no clues what I was on about.

I said, can you adjust the timing for me?
Clarifying when they stood about asking, did I want cambelts done etc, I said, it's too far advanced.

Nope.

5th one I stopped at, a scruffy looking place, with an Indian gentleman said bring it in and I'll have a look.
2 mins later it was perfect. I told him what the others had said and he laughed and said and then they open a workshop....

Best mechanic we had, had no workshop, he was work from home.

I am aware many modern cars don't have this adjustment now, but it's not that rare, or old, and to not know even what I meant?!!

You cant adjust the timing on car now days and if you did the the ecu will reset it back as much as it can. In the old days some clowns made a big thing of setting the timing marks exactly as the book said. However the octane rating of the petrol and compression of the engine made the marks only a rough guide.
