1458667 2019-03-03 21:18:00 A friends PC has died and I'm trying to fix it on the cheap. I still need to do some testing but out of 3 of these machines the other 2 both had the motherboard die so I'm strongly suspecting it's happened again (putting me off older Asrock boards as well).

He has an i5 3470 and 2 x 4GB of DDR3 RAM so I'm looking for something to accomodate those.

Anyone know where I might find one for a reasonable price?, trademe and pricespy are a bust currently and the one supplier that still had new ones when the last one died is now out of stock.
I have found some second hand on AliExpress for about $70-80NZ so that's my best option so far.

I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on this when I can get an ex lease replacement or a brand new AMD MD/CPU/RAM for $200-$400.
A new board for under $150 would be Ideal. I have no Idea why people ask such high prices for hardware this old, especially given the price of new hardware at equivalent performance levels.

1458668 2019-03-03 21:40:00 Aliexpress might be the better option unless you can find one from a NZ Second hand places.

Brought lots of Computer components and other Items from Aliexpress, mostly have been brand New though, so a 1155 motherboard very well may be second hand /refurbished What you Need to look at is the Sellers Reviews / Feedback, some are terrible.

Shipping takes approx. 2 -3 Weeks, some times quicker sometimes slower. Last item I Got was 2 X HP 3.5" SAS/SATA Server Hot-Swap Hard Drive Caddy a 1/3rd of the price than NZ, and Brand New.

Simple, the Socket is no longer produced, so when a Motherboard blows, OFTEN the CPU is generally still Fine but wont fit any other socket. The CPU is the expensive part compared to the motherboard.

Yeah I get that, but even $100 for a 5 or 6 year old motherboard seems high to me, some sellers are asking $200 -$300 or even more in some cases. My point being if you shop around that's getting way to close to the price to just buy new ones and sell off the working parts

1458670 2019-03-03 22:44:00 at just over $200 for an ex lease i5, trying to source parts then repair really isnt worth the effort.
Add to that the risk of buying a used mb. Almost every used mb Ive bought had some sort of intermittent issue, probably the reason they were stripped for parts .

or an i3 for $150

1458671 2019-03-03 22:58:00 Plenty of cheap mb's on trademe

even complete PC's for less than $150

$80 for an i5 (HP)

The HP's will have non standard parts though, PSU & sometimes even mb connectors(power) are non standard. So they are throw away when they fail .

1458672 2019-03-04 00:15:00 Yeah those low profile business class machines are cheap enough but won't be able to fit his 3 hard drives and graphics card which is the main reason I'm looking for a motherboard.
Otherwise it would need to be a tower style ex lease and they are less common.

Thanks for the suggestions though I'll keep looking.

There's a chance it might not be the board though, might be getting ahead of myself. I can Swap out the PSU, Graphics card, and boot drive but after that I'm out of compatible parts so I'll try that first just in case it's not the motherboard.

Weirdly I searched trademe last night and found nothing, searched again just now and added 3 to my watchlist and they are not new auctions.

Yeah I now have 4 of those on my watchlist. I swear the search turned up only 2 or 3 last night, must have mis typed it or something.
Note 2 of those are overpriced and one is a proprietary board that won't fit the case. But the other 4 all look promising thanks guys.
