1457480 2019-01-21 05:58:00 Here's the deal-e-o . . . . . . .

A very good bud with whom I worked once I retired, needs to get rid of M$ stuff .
Reasons are complicated, but suffice to say it is a money-thing for him as in ZERO cash flow .

My question to F1 is this: can I just load up a distro of Linux - maybe Ubuntu - onto a harddrive and just send that to him and let him install it in his tower?

Does Linux get all bent if it finds itself in a totally new environment? I know M$ has a super hissy-fit - but what about Ubuntu?

The big problem - as if this isn't enough - is that he is a total ignoramus about computers and I want to try to make this as painless as possible .
He can more than likely find a 12 year old to make the physical changeover of the hardware and MAYBE help if there needs to be any TERMINAL action too . Maybe!

He has no personal stuff that needs to be protected on the current system, and I THINK I read that Ubuntu can access old Word or Notepad files on the old hdd anyway - right?

He may have to add the new hdd to the tower and make the Ubuntu distro be the boot . . . . that might be interesting . . . huh?

Right now, he has a Blue Star :( next to his clock - so I imagine the time is short .

1457481 2019-01-21 06:40:00 Short answer is yes.
Longer answer is “it depends” (on the default config of whatever you choose) - don’t install the propietary nvidia modules etc.

The Debian systems I have done this with just needed /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules deleted so it would pick up the new network hardware as the default network - not sure if that is still the case with the latest systemd networking config.

Do an install of what you want and try it out on another of your systems.
