1152535 2010-11-13 05:21:00 With all the calls to catch up Australia (where they get $20 an hour to flip burgers) and the latest union demands. I think it is time to think beyond the square.

I have been saying for a while that we should be putting our wages down by say 5% a year and all the fat cats wages (by 10%) and property values etc.

This way we would be able to compete with Asia etc and stand a good chance of being able to sell our wine and kiwifruit, seafood etc.

I see ANZ / National are going to move back office jobs to India 50 at a time (so it does not get noticed).

Arn't these the high paying jobs that all the "experts" say we should be building here !

Let Australia price itself off the map as they will do when Kzahkastan and Afghanistan etc come on stream with all their minerals right next to China. And what about Chile and Brazil they have lots of raw materials with low wages.

What do you think ?

That is a ridiculous idea that 99.5% of people would be opposed to.

There is no need for that sort of language especially the c word.

Better rephrase that you foul mouthed [edited].

Oh the irony. :D

But to be serious, there are merits to the idea, it being fair is another point altogether.

Put a bit of thought into Digbys suggestions. Think outside the square. I till you one thing it sure would get rid of unemployment.

1152542 2010-11-13 08:43:00 A deflation, you mean? Unfortunately, it is commonly believed to be one of the worst things that can happen to an economy.

1) When you lower people's wages, prices must come down. It's not negotiable, or we'll see a reduction in living standards.

2) When price go down, most people would delay their purchases (e.g. getting anew i7 990X computer :D) for as long as possible, because they expect the price is coming down in the long run.

3) When no one buys anything, firms can't sell anything, so they close down.

4) So people becomes unemployed.

5) So... anyway, the end of the world disaster will come prematurely, taking away EVERY SINGLE LIFE on the planet. Not even an Ark (like what they do in 2012?), or anything like that.

Result: nope, it won't work.

What's wrong with the C word? How is it offensive? It's only offensive if you take it as offensive.

Anyway, LynX explains it well.
