1150602 2010-11-05 23:56:00 Hey team,

When the Samsung Omnia 7's are released in a few days in The States I plan to import one instead of waiting for parallel importers to get stock in at the end of Nov. and charge outrageous prices (due to sourcing stock)

What hitches am I liable to run into upon getting the phone up and running? Am I going to be able to just pop my SIM card in and away I go? (I plan to run it on 2Degrees and just buy mobile data blocks).

Cheers.

1150603 2010-11-06 00:12:00 Just make sure it does 850 and 2100 Meg and then it will do 3G on all NZ carriers.. paulw (1826)
1150604 2010-11-06 00:24:00 If this is what you're referring to: www.samsungmobileusa.com it won't work here since it's on Verizon's CDMA network.

If what you're referring to is: www.gsmarena.com then it will be fine on 2Degrees' and Vodafone's network, but limited coverage on XT (since it doesn't do 850Mhz HSDPA).

The only other catch is that some US carriers lock their phones so you can't use them on another network. You should check this before buying it.

From the importing perspective, remember you will be charged GST at the border so factor that into your budgeting process. If you're getting it shipped by someone like DHL or Fedex, they'll normally sort it out on your behalf, otherwise you will get a letter from NZ Customs with an invoice to pay before the goods can be released.

1150605 2010-11-06 00:37:00 Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies.

This is the phone I plan on importing: www.phonearena.com

It appears to do 850 through to 2100 frequencies. I don't plan to use 3G a whole lot anyway seeing as my residence is just on the outskirts of 3G reception, I'll be using it on Wifi more than anything.

Good point Somebody. I'll have to obviously try and purchase it unlocked. And yeah, I have factored all the extra charges I may incur due to importing and I'm ok with that.

Thanks again.

EDIT: hyfeno.com

Will carriers over here do that? If I call up asking for an unlock code will they oblige? Anyone done it before?

1150606 2010-11-06 01:51:00 As I understand it the UMTS relates to the 3G data capabilities. The info on that link implies that VF/2Degrees would be its natural home in NZ. johcar (6283)
1150607 2010-11-07 01:10:00 ...It appears to do 850 through to 2100 frequencies...GSM and 3G frequencies aren't the same. This phone will work on Vodafone or 2degrees, both 2g and 3g, but won't work on Telecom XT - XT uses 850MHz WCDMA exclusively, which this phone doesn't support on that frequency. Erayd (23)

Even when the parcel value is declared honestly? I've had a 100% collection rate on items I've imported from the USA which are eligible for GST.

Yeah, I have taken into account what I may stand to pay to get the phone into the country.

I'm hoping that the people I purchase it from may cut me a break and declare it cheaper than it is.

Also, has anyone ever requested an unlock code from either Vodafone or 2Degrees before? Do they easily give that up or is it a case by case basis?
