1152555 2010-11-14 02:52:00 the big problem with reducing wages is its the wrong end of the supply chain.
you may make your product cheaper but more than likely it will continued to get sold as normal price with the middle men or retailer enjoying the extra profit.

trying to get everyone along the chain to drop wages is near on impossible. at best is they don't increase wages and wear their individual costs.

1152556 2010-11-14 04:26:00 Apologies for swearing at you, working a 9hr shift at Maccas in the stinking heat and coming home to study like a madman, doesn't work well with my stress levels.

hey, good for you.:clap
I think that must be the first time ever someone actually apologised on the forum.

Case in point - you have a macjob, imagine if the wages went down even more. Stuff that, bad enough as it is now.

1152557 2010-11-14 04:56:00 With all the calls to catch up Australia (where they get $20 an hour to flip burgers) and the latest union demands . I think it is time to think beyond the square .

I have been saying for a while that we should be putting our wages down by say 5% a year and all the fat cats wages (by 10%) and property values etc .

This way we would be able to compete with Asia etc and stand a good chance of being able to sell our wine and kiwifruit, seafood etc .

I see ANZ / National are going to move back office jobs to India 50 at a time (so it does not get noticed) .

Arn't these the high paying jobs that all the "experts" say we should be building here !

Let Australia price itself off the map as they will do when Kzahkastan and Afghanistan etc come on stream with all their minerals right next to China . And what about Chile and Brazil they have lots of raw materials with low wages .

What do you think ?

The problem is that the wages in these other countries are too low . China for instance, their currency is under valued due to it being pegged to the US dollar . It needs to rise, to make chinese wages higher when compared to NZs . ALso china doesn't spend any money, it mainly saves it, so the west is getting poor, while the Asian countries are getting richer . The need to spend and remove tarrifs . Japan for instance imposes huge tarrifs on NZ milk products, which make it financially impossible to export to it .
We could make the NZ dollar worth 20US cents if we wanted, and then we would have lower wages . However there is a huge problem in the global financial system at the moment, especially with the US printing so much money, and gold prices at their highest levels ever, it is referred to as the currency war, so there is very likely to be another crash .

I'm still at school and it would be an annoyance, but seeing as I only really pay for some things such as petrol and gym membership etc etc it wouldn't be too bad.

But I know the people that work there full time would struggle (although most of them are managers so get $15 p/hour rather than $12.75)

Thanks for the apology. (I think we should never use the "c" word)

Some great comments and I was pleased to see that some of you actually agreed with my thoughts, even though know one thinks it would actually work.

Some things that make me think it has advantages.
Recently the minimum wage went up by $2 an hour !
Why because some politicians said it should.
That mean that all business had to put their prices up or cut their costs, or suffer a loss.

Why do we now send fish to china for them to process it and send it back here to our supermarkets.
Why are they working on robots to pick kiwifruit ?
Why did a Bay Of Plenty musssel firm building a new factory next to their old one which employs 200 people and put in mussel opening machines (a world first)

They do it because of the labour cost they can no longer sell our commodities.

So if we want to keep selling dairy, wine, horticulture we cant keep putting up our wages.

We need that income so that we can buy cars and PC's and Mp3 players etc.

In the USA many menial jobs only pay $10US an hour.

ANZ/National are moving more jobs from New Zealand and (Australia!) to India in lots of 50 (see the Herald on Friday) this is so that they want be noticed. Why are they moving them to India ?

Imho until Asian wages rise and western wages fall so that that they are about the same then we will all benefit.

1152561 2010-11-14 06:49:00 Even though i do not have a job. When i eventually go to get a job, i expect to get a decent wage for my work.

i think the current minimum wage of $12.75 (i think thats correct) is, although not much, it's more that what the minimum used to be. If it goes any lower, i wont bother getting a job.

I believe, if you do a hard days work, you should get a decent amount of money for it.

Good luck with that mate!

If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that you should expect to work your ass off, and then get royally screwed.

We all want to get paid $25/hr to sit on our asses telling people down the phone "Have you tried turning it off and on again?", it just doesn't happen. Hell, I'm only 25c above minimum, a hard days work really is a hard days work.

1152563 2010-11-14 08:46:00 mind you on the other hand countries like china, the workers are demanding higher wages. now theres a tread of pulling out of china and doing manufacturing closer to home where they can keep an eye on quality control. tweak'e (69)
1152564 2010-11-14 08:49:00 I already think the wages is too low in NZ

The GST increase and the high income tax is already enough. The last thing I wanna see is a wage reduction.

If they reduce that, I'll be the first one to leave with many others .lol
