| 1189099 | 2011-03-25 08:35:00 | It probably uses a "web bug" (an invisible 1x1 gif or other image file) that needs to be downloaded from the tracking server when the email is opened. The "web bug" has a unique filename so they know when "web bug" xyz.gif is downloaded, message xyz has been displayed on the recipient's computer. encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com It's still possible to prevent this type of tracking for example if you set Outlook to not download images in emails. cheers W |

| 1189100 | 2011-03-25 10:50:00 | All email clients worth their salt will block requests for external links ("lazy HTML") by default, which defeats this type of tracking. As said prior, responding to Read Receipts is voluntary, and can be set in the receiving client. You can also request a Delivery Receipt so that the target mail server notifies you when the mail has been delivered into the users mailbox, but again this is voluntary and requires server to be configured to respond (which fewer and fewer are). |
