Shows you how much I rely on my accountant ... it was $30k when i started out ... don't have to worry about those "little" things.

And not forgetting that your accountants fees are tax deductible :D

1152449 2010-11-13 19:06:00 I would trust the IRD about as much as the average Mcdonald employee, on any matter.

Well I have never had an accountant. Husband has been working for himself since 1993. I've done the books.

I have asked IRD a few things over the years:
What forms to use.

How to change from a sole trader to Partnership - and back again.

How to calculate percentage of household claimables and what you can claim.

It is on their website too and you can also look this stuff up off independant websites.

They haven't given me wrong info yet - I do double check.

Also you have to keep on top of everything anyway. If the accountant gets it wrong or as I can recall in a couple of cases steals cash from you instead of paying it on to the IRD it is you personaly that is responsible for the debt. IRD takes you to the cleaners not the accountant. In fact accountancy has to be one of the very few professions that never seems to end up with any responsibility for their own mistakes.

1152451 2010-11-13 21:08:00 I thought you got a job working in a Pharmacy in Napier ?
Why are you becoming a sole trader ?
Just interested.

and why would you give the money to the accountant to pay your taxes? The only money mine gets is his fees.
There are a few others like politicians, investment advisers.
