1189143 2011-03-25 00:40:00 My wife has just handed me an Emtec 16gb memory stick that she says has a lot of data on it that she can't acess.
My XP computer and explorer reports that the memory stick is not formated.
Any ideas on how I can recover the data?
Thanks for any help David

1189144 2011-03-25 00:49:00 Try a data recovery program

I use FileScavenger (but which is not free)

However I've heard good things about another program called Photorec which IS free.

1189145 2011-03-25 01:15:00 Recuva from the makers of CCleaner may also work for you. Freeware. Scubadoo (16151)

1189147 2011-03-25 02:05:00 +1 for PhotoRec. Works really well. I have used it to recover data from faulty USB flash drives as well as photos from an SD card! GR8Metal (14133)
1189148 2011-03-25 03:46:00 I have used photorec and recovered the files.
There are over 750 files all renamed. Going to be a slow process looking at them and renaming so they can be sorted. Photorec is a dos program that scanned the memory stick without alterihg it.
The other recovery programs say first format the stick then recover the files.
They say format in NTFS. All my other Mem sticks are formated in fat32. is this a problem? David

1189149 2011-03-25 06:38:00 Did you try FileScavenger?

I've never had it tell me to format anything and it also recovers with the original filenames if it can (sometimes it can't, though)

1189150 2011-03-25 09:35:00 Remember that Fat32 has a file size limitation of 4gb. If you have larger files, format the stick to NTFS. mzee (3324)
1189151 2011-03-25 09:58:00 Thanks everyone. I have now purchased File Scavenger that gave me a clean recover of the files. Unfortunately not with the original names but in a form thats easier to search through than the files from PhotoRec Thanks again David DavidW (532)
1189152 2011-03-26 06:03:00 From my limited experience I would NEVER select 'format' on a device that had data that I still wanted to extract.

I was brought up to believe that Foramt was a pretty fast way of flushing your data down the loo... it might not be irretrievable to the deeply technically minded, but you really won't want to try getting it back afterwards unless you had some awesome tools.
