1190431 2011-03-30 00:46:00 Existing system is Intel E6600 with xp.
I want to create a dual boot system with xp & Win 7.
I have created a new 30gb partition and intend to load Win 7 Home 64 into it.
This seems easy enough but do I have to do anything to the MBR to get the dual boot screen, or will the boot screen install automatically when I install the Win 7.
Thanks in advance. Arjay

1190432 2011-03-30 00:49:00 No it'll create a menu after, so you can boot from either. Once Win7 is installed. Altho 30 GB isnt a lot for Win7. It'll probably fill up in no time. I would make the partition bigger Speedy Gonzales (78)

I would at least double that partition size, I have used a 40G in the past and found it got a bit tight even without much installed.

1190434 2011-03-30 01:37:00 Once 7 has installed you will have to use a program to edit the bootloader because windows xp uses boot.ini, 7 does not. nedkelly (9059)

1190436 2011-03-30 01:56:00 No, windows 7 installs it's own bootloader onto the boot drive and takes over, it auto creates the boot menu. No need to edit anything.

If you meant simply to make changes then yeah, EasyBCD will let you edit the boot menu. I like to tidy up the names and shorten the time to default boot as it is way too long. None of this is needed though.

1190437 2011-03-30 03:11:00 It's easier to put XP on first, then W7. Doesn't really matter though, if anything gest mucked up chances are you'll be able to boot into one or other of the OSs, and either fix the boot.ini file or install EasyBCD and use that. There's not a lot than can go wrong. wratterus (105)
