1190534 2011-03-30 09:37:00 Did you check the HDD SMART?

Did you check that DMA was enabled on the HDD?

1190535 2011-03-30 09:38:00 No. I'll see what he says after he defrags it then reboots Speedy Gonzales (78)
1190536 2011-03-30 18:58:00 Were there any errors in the event Viewer / System logs ? and what about Windows Reliability monitor - Was that checked - there is quite often hints or causes listed there, especially when its lagging then comes right. ????

I wouldn't be to concerned about disk defrag - windows 7 has it auto set to do weekly, unless you disable it.

1190537 2011-03-30 19:29:00 Well I'll go back in when he decides to come back Speedy Gonzales (78)
1190538 2011-03-30 21:53:00 If he comes back - if the HDD was failing your defrag might have finished it off... that's why I always do a SMART check before trying anything else, just in case.

Case in point, my friends PC was running very slowly, taking ages to do things and freezing - just like the OP said his was doing.

Turned out my friends HDD had over 1000 reallocated sectors with more coming all the time. Lucky I got to it when I did and was able to recover most data (not all, some had been lost when he had reinstalled windows several times trying to fix the problem)

1190543 2011-04-08 23:53:00 Still reckon you should look at the hard drive health. Agent_24 (57)
