1191621 2011-04-03 06:43:00 a neighbour's been having issues with their internet connection.

they have one of those 'awesome' routers given to them by telecom. the last couple of days the connection has been non-existant.

no amount of unplugging/turning off the router would fix the issue. now they do have two phones in the house, one by the desktop(XP) and one in the kitchen.

the phone by the desktop does have a filter on it , the other phone doesnt so not sure if its causing the issue because its never happened before as far as im aware.

they rang telecom and said that the other phone needs a filter.

aslo, when they were on the phone to telecom they could browse the net, but soon after hanging up, the internet and broadband lights on the modem go out.

could the modem be dying???

:thanks

1191622 2011-04-03 06:58:00 The other phone will need a filter as already said. Snorkbox (15764)
1191623 2011-04-03 07:06:00 Definitely needs a filter. Greven (91)
1191624 2011-04-03 07:24:00 Unplug the other phone until they get a filter. It's a sign of no filter.

IME those Thompson routers aren't half bad.

1191626 2011-04-03 08:23:00 yeah, i think they'll gonna get one, but why act up now? the router's been in place for a year or so GameJunkie (72)
1191627 2011-04-03 08:56:00 Coz they're crap routers that are prone to stupid little problems like that, though the others are right and all phones should be filtered.

1191628 2011-04-03 09:40:00 Just like people some routers just don't like the noise that is shot around the line due to the lack of filter, although I'm surprised the users of that kitchen phone were able to use it well due to the noise they would have got from the DSL connection. Then again I have heard that in some cases the line is perfectly usable without a filter. (I get a lovely static noise and a whine without a filter on my lines) The Error Guy (14052)
1191629 2011-04-03 22:48:00 the modems aren't greatr so people tend to zero in on them first but it doesn't mean it's the problem.

As a test try the modem with no phones or filters connected at all, if it works ok start putting things back 1 by 1 and see if you can figure out what's causing it. edit - if the cord wont plug directly into the jack you can steal one off a phone.

If it doesn't talk to telcom again, if you pay the wiring maintenance fee there's no risk in having them look at it and as both the line and the modem are supplied by them they should fix it.

Couple notes:
plug in filters have a high failure rate and often cause problems
All phones should be filtered or a filter installed in the ETP and a dedicated ADSL jack used for the modem
Filters are primarily to prevent noise on the phone line and should not normally be need by the modem/router
Sources of RF such as cordless phones and microwaves etc aren't good to have close to the modem as they can cause issues

1191630 2011-04-07 22:26:00 just an update: they replaced the filter by the router/desktop and all is back to normal.

cheers guys
