1155797 2010-11-23 00:44:00 Hi Team

The attached image is the instrument end of a data download cable that I use in my business, the other end being a full size serial port plug. The connection marked in red is open circuit and my spare cable does not have the outer sheath secured to the plug, so it hangs on the wires and life expectancy is not good.

Any ideas as to what sort of organisation would be best equipped to fit a new plug? I'd prefer in Auckland, but I can mail it anywhere in NZ.

Cheers

PS. I don't think much of the rather narrow view of PF 1 I'm getting at present. :2cents:

1155803 2010-11-23 02:20:00 Looks like an RJ25 connector (upload.wikimedia.org).

RJ11, RJ14, and RJ25 all use the same six-position modular connector, thus are physically identical except for the different number of contacts (two, four and six respectively) allowing connections for 1, 2 or 3 phone lines respectively.

1155804 2010-11-23 03:37:00 What sort of Serial Plug is it? If you can reterminate that end I'd get an RJ12 cable and put the serial on 1 end. You can get 3,10 &15m cables from Jaycar. Get a long 1 and put the serial in the middle :D

Shame the instrument wasn't RJ45, you can get RJ45 to DB9 & DB25 adapters

1155805 2010-11-23 03:50:00 All you need is a new plug and someone with the appropriate crimping tool.

I'd do it for you but mine only does RJ45.

You should be able to find the right tool at Jaycar if you want to buy one yourself.

1155806 2010-11-23 04:18:00 With that sort of cable getting 6 wires into the right holes while keeping the sheath long enough to be a strain relief can waste a lot of time. PaulD (232)
