1155209 2010-11-22 00:19:00 It came home to me how close to home the event at Pike River has made itself part of my life.

I am one of many volunteer Fire and rescue personnel across the country and I was stunned although in a way not surprised to learn that one of the guys down the mine was a Deputy Fire Chief of one of the local brigades along with the sons of two other brigades members one of whose father I have trained alongside.

It strikes you with a realisation how many of you do not realise when you see the emergency rescue personnel responding that they are also normal hard working people as well. Many volunteers who do a job for their community and yet get caught up in these disasters themselves.

He was 1 . 7 kilometres into the solid rock pit – and between 300 and 400m from his nearest colleague – when a methane explosion shot a fireball through the mine . The first indication that something was wrong came when gas monitoring devices failed .

But it was Mr Rockhouse who raised the alarm . Initially overcome by the blast, he stumbled to the one working phone to call to the surface . "There was no-one else around that phone and that phone is still there . . . no-one is answering it," Mr Whittall said .

As the tunnel filled with smoke, he moved his way up to the surface, wearing breathing apparatus and stopping every 50-100m to inhale from fresh-air outlets that run through the mine .

Lets hope those still down there have access to these also, and they aren't dying of dehydration . . .

No matter how much training you have nothing really prepares you for reality.
