I am getting a new Dell laptop. I am spending about $1,400 on it and want to make sure it last and remains fast. I want to get a good anti virus software for it but don't want it to slow my computer down, but I do want it to fully protect my laptop from viruses and hackers. I am willing to pay money for it so whatever the best anti virus there is is what I want. I will have windows 7 professional on it as well.

1154910 2010-11-20 16:46:00 Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free.

Don't waste money on paying for crapware that will only give you hell.

MS SE is 2nd best for free.
In addition to that you will need at least 2 anti-spywares.
Spybot plus Malware Bytes or Supaerantispyware.

Spybot plus Malware Bytes or Supaerantispyware. Second those suggestions.

Many Techs see crap AV's every day that are meant to be the "best". The only two I usually see that dont have problems are Nod & MSSE in that order.

Both use very little system resources as well.

Ditto.

Have ESET Smart Security here and it's brilliant.

1154914 2010-11-20 21:25:00 Microsoft have come a long way in the AV business since the onecare days. Security Essentials is pretty good & Eset NOD32 is even better, but no anti-virus app is perfect.

I see the occasional computer running NOD32 get infected, but nowhere near as often as the other major AV vendors.
