1154900 2010-11-20 09:56:00 Finally, we managed to get the jetboat going!!

It has been a looooong 6mths on this project, so much sanding and fiberglassing! all considering the tests on the Ruamahunga and in the school pool have been an ultimate success (with David conveniently attacking me with the boat when I jumped in to get it stated by driving it into my face *ouch*)

Hull was Fiberglass and HD foam, 124cm x 40cm x 27cm, not sure on the 27 cm. the engine was an unbranded 2 stroke weed eater (unsure of displacement, David chose engine with a straight drive to the jet (can't remember model/size)

I didn't do a lot of the construction work as my 5th form timetables don't fit well with the 7th form ones but since we are both boarders with a heap of study leave we spent a good bit of time in the workshop wiring the receiver and servos in.

On our first river trials one of the steering rods fell out of the jet drive's steering sockets resulting in a big panic as the throttle cut failed whilst the boat careened towards some hefty boulders, somehow the opposite rod managed to catch and the boat VERY narrowly avoided disaster, now David has actually guled the rods in place we hope to avoid such fails

No video's yet, I hope to get some soon when we take the boat down to Henley lake maybe next week.

Just a whole heap of pics I took for dimensioning whilst I wire up the lights since I don't have access to the boat over the weekend and randoms I took during pool tests.

I think its looking pretty good, I think David should be feeling pretty darned proud about his work. Btw, his Design portfolio got an excellence for this :clap

NOTE: Daptop the goat slayer or Mavis TGS (the goat slayer) are the nicknames we give to our 7th form by the end of the year. it used to happen at 3rd form, but one year they forgot some.

David + laptop = daptop
goat slayer, for bringing home 5 goats on a hunting trip, all shot pretty much through the heart at least 2x

1154903 2010-11-20 10:09:00 One word only, coz all the other words would get filtered!

SWEET!!!!!

I had a brother who built the real thing, and had similar drama with the steering. The bozos at Hamilton Jet had left out two little grubscrews that secure the final nozzle which compresses the jet down at the point of exit - so when power was applied this nozze was thrown back against the steering gear, forcing it into a very tight turn, where the only remedy was to cut the power (since the steering gear got ripped from the hull while trying to correct it).

1154906 2010-11-22 06:23:00 Just wiring up some high intensity lights into the front scoop and above the trim tabs so that the rear of the jet unit will be lit up at night.

so far looking pretty good. i'm also going to get a screen to cover the front scoop to make it look much better.

Thanks for feedback! i'll get a vid tonight of the night run

1154908 2010-11-22 22:28:00 It was too dark to get some vids :( and the scoop lights didn't look that great.

rear trim tab lights, well, they were flippen fantastic. looked pretty darned epic. i'm going to re wire the front lights and add a grill, also need to get more air to the engine. it's running a wee bit hot.

David managed to hit a rock as well, took a chunk of paint out but the hull is fine, just add some more fiberglass!!

I'll try to get vids next week as david won't be around for now. we have study leave and he is going into hospital overnight for an op on his leg to get some pins removed.
