Most reasonably priced ones are side-lit rather than back-lit LEDs (back-lit are better). You also have the new 3D technology, but whether you actually need that right now instead of waiting a few technology generations for better quality and price. I do recommend the 40" LCD Samsung LA40B650 (Series 6) TV. It is what I got earlier this year. It has several USB ports so you can play videos stored on your USB memory stick. It also has wireless network support so you can stream content between PC and TV -- although you need to purchase the extra dongle (~$150) for that (they don't tell you this in the shop :rolleyes:). It has full HD + freeview which is pretty much standard now. This model also is a 100 Hz which is supposed to be good for fast action video. Price: you should be able to get it for around $1550-1600, but do shop around to see who has the best price. |

| 1154765 | 2010-11-20 02:05:00 | Three weeks ago we bought a 40" Sony Bravia EX500 from Norman Ross for $1330. Probably could of got that down to 1300 if I pushed harder. I think any of the main retailers would match that at the moment. It is an excellent TV. Looked at Samsung equivalent also - Consumer Mag put Samsung TV at top but earlier in the year their reader survey didn't rate Samsung very high for any after sales support - nor do a number of users on usergroups both here and abroad and that is why we chose Sony. Also bought a Panasonic twin freeview HD recorder at the same time for $698. Both are excellent - plugged in turned on and both automatically tuned in. | kandjc (15143) | ||
| 1154766 | 2010-11-20 07:52:00 | Just got a new 42" plasma full HD Panasonic from Harveys recently, $1300 and something with 16 months deferred payment. Would not watch anything else. | --Wolf-- (128) | ||
| 1154767 | 2010-11-20 09:40:00 | If you are thinking of getting a Samsung, have a look at the specials at Tricky Dicky at the moment... SAMSUNG 101cm (40") Full High Definition LCD TV LA40C550 $1088 | John H (8) | ||
| 1154768 | 2010-11-20 10:50:00 | There is another thread on here somewhere with a good discussion. Of course models change so frequently that current information is hard to get. I've been pondering upgrading but am happy with my 32inch Panasonic CRT so there is no incentive. From what I have gathered, Plasma is still better for 40 inches and above. Clearer picture, better colours, defined black, wide viewing angle, not prone to fading picture in daylight. Sony is very good, Panasonic has the best overall combination of reliability and performance. In truth probably all brands are good today, so buying the best picture in your opinion is a safe choice. |

| 1154771 | 2010-11-20 22:50:00 | Just bought a 42 LCD yesterday. An impulse buy - too good to pass up: 100 Hz 'motion flow', USB JPEG and movies (DivX and some other formats, don't know which yet), wifi capable (maybe with an add-on), with a free Blu-Ray player, LG, all for $997 :banana. Harvey Normans, sale price only yesterday. I am very impressed with the quality and extra options. Online reviews are good. Have not tried Blu Ray yet but ordinary DVDs look great; even analogue TV is OK although I will get onto satellite Freeview and terrestrial Freeview when it comes to our area in 2012. 42 in fits our room perfectly; considered 50in but we sit fairly close as it is a narrow room so it probably would be an overkill and besides the extra price for an LCD 50in is more than double. Went for an LCD as plasma has too much screen reflection and are not as bright and vivid unless in a dark room - however this is of course personal preference and many people are happy with plasmas, especially their cheaper price. I agree with 'paulw' - go for a 46in if your budget and room dimensions allow for it. Or even a 50in. There are a lot of good deals around and sales people WILL drop the price if you haggle and let them know you are looking at their competitors' prices. I was amazed how much a 50in LCD was reduced when the sales guy in one shop knew that I was about to leave - it was several hundred dollars. You can also haggle the price of an extended warranty. Normally I (and many other PF1ers) do not get extended warranties. When I was asked at HN if I "was an extended warranty sort of guy" I said NO, to which the reply was "I can give you the $120 warranty for $100" and when I said NO again, it was dropped to $80 and I went for it ... thinking that I will probably sell this 42in before the 4 year warranty runs out so I can advertise it as having a warranty... might update to a 55in LED or whatever the new technology is in 3 years... after moving to another house with a larger room :rolleyes:. Good luck with your purchase. Just wait for a good deal. |

Key features that I really like is the ability to play stuff off your network (although not hooked up yet) you can use ethernet or wireless and the ability to play off a usb stick. There were better features that could be had such as LED backlit, 100hz, 3D but we came to the conclusion that these features were not worth the additional cost. To get the freeview working we had to purchase a new antenna for our roof but was certainly worth it and not that hard to install. For use we were going to go for a Samsung or a Sony because of quality and at the end of the day Samsung won cause the store had a special on at the time. Good luck on your choice of a big screen tv. |
