1154401 2010-11-20 03:13:00 What's wrong with XP?

It probably the most used Windows Operating System.

Our family was using 98 SE in an 800x600 resolution on a 17inch monitor till 2005. lol, my dad thought XP wouldn't work on the computer.

Well 5 years later, im on the same computer right now running XP Pro. Although the pc is upgraded lots since it was originally built.

1154403 2010-11-20 03:25:00 What's wrong with XP?And this from someone who only five months ago advocated Windows 95 (pressf1.co.nz) as a good choice of OS for a modern, general-purpose system?

Hate to break it to you, but your standards for what constitutes a 'good' OS are somewhat low .

1154404 2010-11-20 03:27:00 Windows 95 is a classic, and if it supported all my video cards, tv cards, firefox, wifi etc.. i would use it. goodiesguy (15316)
1154405 2010-11-20 03:32:00 We had Windows 95 until maybe 2004 I think with a 200Mhz AMD chip with 32MB RAM. The limiting factor was the RAM, at the time we could get the latest Firefox and it would all work but many homepage chewed up 32MB and it went into virtual memory. MS Office with Outlook was no problem.

It was a classic, we had the A version so it didn't support wifi or USB but we didn't have any of those. Had a HP 6L laser printer via LPT

We donated to eDay in 2006 or 2008 was a bit hesitant b/c apart from the internet it was fully functional. Mp3 were fine but DVD we usually use the TV anyway and yes, even on a Pentium 133Mhz I had a tv tuner card when I was studying, was provided to me when I went boarding.... I think at the time you could of gotten video accelerators to make DVD work - from the likes of Matrox Millenium .. oh the days just thinking about it. Glad to say with digital photography I still use film now and then and VCRs :D

The good old days were that you could actually walk into a computer shop and see school children playing on them, you could have chats to the owners. They would help you out by sourcing v particular computer parts. These days seems to be overloaded on the internet and just buy from e-stores .. It was like a lollistore.

It sucked in 1995.....

It still sucked in 98....

Finally it almost attained non-suckage status with SE...

XP killed it.

And as great as XP has been, W7 reigns supreme.

1154407 2010-11-20 03:38:00 Windows 95 is a classic, and if it supported all my video cards, tv cards, firefox, wifi etc.. i would use it.Oh god, here we go again :groan:.

Windows 95 was good in its day (although it always had a lot of shortcomings), but today:
It's so outdated it's not funny
It can't use modern hardware
It can't run modern software
It isn't secure
It's no longer supported by the vendor
It's often unstable
It's often 16-bit only (the 32bit release only came out later)
It lacks support for many common networking features
It has no concept of user accounts (there is only one user possible on the system)

If it supported "all my video cards, tv cards, firefox, wifi etc..", then it wouldn't be Windows 95! Savvy?

The whole point of more recent OS releases is that they add features the old ones didn't have, and remove problems that they did have.

1154409 2010-11-20 03:42:00 Windows XP is still supported though. and many, many people still use it. goodiesguy (15316)
1154410 2010-11-20 03:46:00 Windows XP is still supported though.Er... no it isn't, not properly. XP 32bit is only supported if SP3 is installed, and XP 64bit isn't supported at all.

See here (windows.microsoft.com).

XP is also incompatible with a lot of newer applications and hardware.

There are reasons why those 'many, many people' you refer to are busy upgrading in droves.
