2010-11-22 20:08:00 | Unfortunately, the level of safety the hand wringers require is never likely to be met. :groan: Actually, I thought one of them summed it up pretty well when he said Going in there is like looking down the barrel of a loaded gun! Well yes, thats true, but looking down the barrel of a loaded gun is relatively safe if you stop and think about it. ;) Anyway, Ive given up on any chance of a rescue, if in fact there ever was any, and am focusing my wrath on the "Ghoulish Media" who just cant wait to report any bad news and are trying to turn the whole tragedy into a drama. I can imagine their excitement when the first body is carried out.

2010-11-22 20:14:00 | Digby:- On 9/11 or 11/9/2001 343 firemen died at the World Trade Centre. They went into a building that was unsafe at the time they went apparently. Whether they were sent by the powers that be or they volunteered really makes no difference but for some reason I'm pleased I didn't send them there. Exactly. Sending more people in with a high risk of them dieing when we don't even know for sure if they are alive is retarded. How would you feel if you sent 10 men in there on the second day, only to find that all the minors were dead and your 10 rescuers were killed in the rescue operation? Although I really hope that they are alive and are rescued soon. I feel immensely sorry for people that have friends and family trapped in there and I can hardly fathom what you are going through.

2010-11-22 20:41:00 | The current TV news coverage of the mining disaster in New Zealand is disgusting. These idiotic Ghouls are fast queuing up and tripping over each other as they attempt to present a different slant on this pyre. When will it stop? Who will the media blame next?

2010-11-22 20:43:00 | I can imagine their excitement when the first body is carried out. Yea it makes me sick to think of it. :groan: And in latest news the robot they sent in "broke down after issue with water". *sigh* Starting to annoy me now, day 5 and nothing still....

2010-11-22 20:51:00 | Now they are starting to get a robot ready! Why did the "experts" not think of that sooner ? Why did they not start drilling that new air shaft straight away. And how can the news media say that we have experienced mine rescue satff ! When was the last such mine disaster in New Zealand where they gained any experience. I imagine they will be miners, but with very little experience in mine rescue (with all due respect) And the TV1 news reporter showed the gear they will be using a 1950's style aqua lung ! With a modern looking face mask. I think we should be able to discuss this. The above comments made by Digby are valid, imo. I have had these same questions since Saturday. It appears that Digby may have a history of posting inappropriate content causing 'flames', but I hope that this will not automatically dismiss the points Digby raised. Another question I have is about the methane detectors in the mine: Why didn't these detectors warn the miners? I assume that the type and number of methane detectors met safety regulations but was that sufficient under the circumstances, and do safety regulations in other countries (USA, Oz, UK) require a better standard of methane detection/warning? I discussed the issue of methane detectors with two friends and they were the same as me, wondering from the first reporting of the disaster why the news media did not cover this basic item. A different issue is that of the rescue team walking into the mine with breathing apparatus. From what I have learned from news reports, even with breathing apparatus there is the risk of setting off another explosion. Scientifically I would like an explanation of how walking (extremely careful walking by the rescue team) in the mine could create a spark. Imagine if the miners managed to be next to a source of clean air but had no water or food - they may not survive after 3 or 4 days, so wouldn't it be worthwhile to send one or two rescue members (who volunteer to do the job) in to locate the miners? (If indeed it is possible to walk and not create a spark.) It might transpire Digby is right will you people apologize to him then? Hopefully this thread can stick to factual replies so we can find some answers.

2010-11-22 21:10:00 | For clarity, here is a summary of my questions: 1. Why wasn't the present drilling started earlier? 2. In what way is the rescue team "experienced"? 3. Why wasn't the robot considered to be used earlier? 4. Is the breathing apparatus used by the rescue team the best available? 5. How much time does the breathing apparatus allow the rescuers, and would this be enough time for them to find the miners and return? 6. Why didn't the methane detectors warn the miners? 7. Is it not possible to walk in the mine without creating a spark? ... These questions may have been answered via the news media, but I am not aware of this. I would think that there are reasonable answers, and I am not inferring blame or incompetence of the rescue team.
