1192194 2011-04-05 21:08:00 Meanwhile a GPON fiber cable runs behind my house but I can't access it :( telecom say no! (still in testing)

Just because Fibre runs past your house doesn't mean it's free-for-all.

Not only that, but have you ever tried "tacking on another connection" from a Fibre Cable?

To be honest if you were a business and looking to spend ~$1500 a month on Fibre (Which is possibly only 10m/bit) you could get Fibre (As a lot of NZ can) ... But the question then becomes: How fat is your wallet? ;)

1192195 2011-04-05 22:25:00 Are you running through a 10Mbit Switch or Ethernet card, or one that is in 10Mbit mode for some reason?

That would limit your otherwise 5Mbit connection to about 1.5Mbit....

1192196 2011-04-06 01:46:00 Wouldn't it be lower, around 1.2? Chilling_Silence (9)
1192197 2011-04-06 03:48:00 Yeah that does make more sense... but perhaps Speedtest is inaccurate if the WAN connection is faster than the LAN... Agent_24 (57)
1192198 2011-04-06 11:20:00 I'm a bit of a novice in this. How do I find out if I'm "running through a 10Mbit Switch or Ethernet card, or one that is in 10Mbit mode" ecurb (3669)
1192199 2011-04-06 11:57:00 Are you connected to the router with Ethernet or Wifi?

If you are using Ethernet are you connected directly or going through a switch\hub?

What version of Windows are you using?

1192200 2011-04-07 06:26:00 I'm connected with ethernet directly into the router. Windows XP SP3 ecurb (3669)
1192201 2011-04-07 06:27:00 My money is still on overloaded exchange backhaul... Chilling_Silence (9)
1192202 2011-04-07 07:21:00 Go into network connections in control panel and find the connection (or just use the network icon in the tray, if you have it enabled) and view the status of the connection.

Under general connection information it will tell you the speed.

1192203 2011-04-07 08:48:00 Status for the LAN or high speed status is 100 Mbps. Is this good news or not? ecurb (3669)
