2011-04-05 04:39:00 | Not sure where the server is LL. I have had no disruptions attributable to the earthquake (that I know about anyway). Thanks. On your speed test it says Server: Christchurch. Is that not what it means? LL

2011-04-05 04:44:00 | I didn't know whether that meant where 'my' server is located, or the server Speedtest were using for the speed test. Here is what I found at TelstraClear: "Christchurch Quake: "Update (08:00 Monday 4th of April) "Our HFC network in Christchurch remains intact, and cabinets that provide services to our residential and business customers in the affected area have had power restored to them. "However, there will be some customers who may not yet have all their services. This will be due to the localised conditions of your home or business and surrounds, which may have impacted on the equipment used to carry our services. "As power is gradually restored across the region, our TelstraClear technicians are working to identify, diagnose and restore such localised issues and faults. "We are prioritising our efforts to help ensure key services are in place for those customers on our medical dependency register, and our business and residential customers. "Please be aware that our Christchurch call centre, which took a hit in the earthquake, is in the process of being re-established. While this is underway customers may face extended wait times. We ask for your patience at this time, and request that if your call is not urgent, you call back another time." I have sent TelstraClear an email to ask about ADSL2, and when I can expect ADSL2 speeds.

2011-04-05 05:04:00 | I just tried again, and it kept wanting to connect to Snap Internet whose server is in ChCh. I finally found out how to force it to use another server (duh!) and here is the result (attached). It appears as though the server listed in the graphic is the server used by Speedtest after all. However, your comment (LL) is still valid. Who knows what greeblies may exist between me and TelstraClear? My local telephone exchange and cabinets may be fine, but there could be upstream problems.

2011-04-05 05:10:00 | Here is the reply from TelstraClear (which was at least fast): "There are a few factors that could be affecting your connection speeds. "If there are any devices on your line (phones/ faxes/ answer machines) that do not have a line filter on them it could be degrading the signal coming through. Please ensure every device has an appropriate filter. To test even further, remove all devices on the line, restart all your equipment (modem/router and PC) and see if the speed increases, if so, it may indicate a bad filter/jackpoint/phone. "More information about setting up ADSL line filters can be found on: clearnet.custhelp.com "Does the actual line speed reporting by your router/ modem reflect the same as these download tests? If so, and your line filters are correctly installed/ other hardware checked out, there could be an issue on your line, such as a break, or other physical problem (noise or interference) or simply, you are too far from the exchange. "As ADSL is distance dependent, if you are outside a certain range the signal you end up getting may only support a certain speed, as from your records with us it shows you originally signed up on a 128k speed and the distance may have been overlooked due to the low speed required. "To check out the levels and other factors you can call us on 0508 888 800, and we would be able to run some tests and find the cause for the low speed you are experiencing." So it isn't their fault!!!

2011-04-05 05:53:00 | All good Wratty. When the issue of distance from the exchange is raised, what is meant in terms of the geographical range where you could expect to get high down to low speeds? I haven't figured out where the exchange is in Woodend, but nowhere is very far around here (!). I suspect that I can only be about 400m from where it is likely to be. Secondly we are in a relatively new subdivision, and our house is about four years old, so the wiring should be good. I am not on the main phone jack in my office - it was a jack that I had professionally installed when we moved in.

2011-04-05 08:33:00 | Basically, you're sync'ing at 11m/bit, you *should* be able to attain it. Have you sent that to them? Your physical connection looks relatively good. Attenuation isn't 100% but it's good enough for a solid connection. Worst-case scenario it'd just disconnect you. Anyways, send that back to them and tell them the issue is their end, not yours, and you want them to fix it.
