1191573 2011-04-03 20:56:00 Funny. I forgot a pass to a win7 machine but was afraid to ask as i thought the thread would get deleted for hacking reasons or something

must stop being paraniodTheres actually a very good password changer available Active@password changer (http://www.password-changer.com/) - it basically removes all passwords.

The NTpassword that is free, sometimes fails, I have had that several many times before purchasing Active@. Its not Free, but does work, and have never had a failure yet.
Another one Is ERD commander, that has locksmith, which allows you to change the passwords at all levels.
You have to boot from a CD drive in both cases, not hack in so to speak over the internet.

As mentioned by 8ftmetalhaed - its usually easy to figure out if someone is wanting the info to do illegal operations.

1191574 2011-04-03 21:02:00 Thanks for your ontinuing replies.

last time this happened, 2-3 weeks ago, i ended up taking it to a PC shop. At that stage the PC would startup, but halt at the Same password request box, in normal & safe modes.
The PC shop returned it with the owner set as Administrator.

Um, if all else fails, how can I bypass the Logon Password issue, do what the PC shop did? Maybe I could train the elderly gent to carry out listed instructions.

This is legit. I know a little about PCs, but more about applications
If a Mod wants to PM me, and prove who they are, I can provide more detail for verification.

1191575 2011-04-03 22:15:00 Removing or changing the passwords as I mentioned above takes only a minute with the correct software.

What you may find, if the PC has reverted back to a domain status, that has to be removed. Simply changing the password may let you in, but it will usually happen again after a certain amount of time or Simply removing the password may not help, if its still looking for a Domain server, as it will require a password to log on.

Thats the one problem I was having with NT password, you could change the password, which it says it had, but when logging back in - incorrect password.

Sounds like the PC shop only changed the password. You may have to do something like This here (www.ehow.com) to remove the domain actions once in the PC, then remove he need to have a password at all.

You shouldn't have to have a password unless you want to.

1191576 2011-04-03 22:20:00 Mmm, if it was on a domain at some point and wasn't properly removed, then all the group policy settings from that domain will still apply to the machine (not just password change requirements, but a lot of other stuff as well). Erayd (23)

1191578 2011-04-04 08:37:00 Ive changed the PC from network to Home based PC, altered the Workgroup name and PC name.
When rebooted, its reverted back to thinking its a Networked PC and we receive the Change Password notification, but retained its Workgroup name and PC name.

1191579 2011-04-04 11:35:00 Give this a look and see if it helps, Being XP Pro - ( assuming any way as home wont have the policy editor and cant be put on domain ) go into the control panel - Administrator Tools - Open local Security policy, Expand Account policies, double click Password Policy - check whats on yours compared to the default on in the attachment.

One other you may want to look at, while in the policy editor - second attachment, highlighted, whats it say regarding a domain ? ( these are defaults for a Non Domain connection.)

Also have a look at This site (www.theeldergeek.com) - go in and change the password policy so it never expires - may help - See attachment for an example ( PS: its XP Mode ) :)
