| 1155667 | 2010-11-22 21:37:00 | They have just created quite a few here in Masterton and some of them are just stupid and likely to have the opposite effect of what they want. I would be a lot more sympathetic of them if the cycle numbers were increasing not decreasing. You hardly see any school children cycling to school now. | mikebartnz (21) | ||

Perhaps that's because of the perception (fact?) that it's too dangerous for kids to ride without a cycle lane - and probably an adult escort as well - these days? Not like 25-30 years ago. Far more traffic on the roads today with vehicles travelling much faster, with drivers much more impatient. More idiots behind the wheel, too, because the vicious circle of traffic volume increase has prevented so many of the current crop of drivers from getting on a bike (pedal or motor) to get a feel for the road (not literally!) before driving their 1.5 - 3 tonne death machines. |

I agree with what you have said. There have definitely been too many cyclist killed on the road lately but I think it is more perception than fact that todays parents will not let their precious little ones ride or walk to school today. If they did there would be one hell of a lot fewer cars on the road at those times. While I have seen many cyclists breaking the road rules it is probably in proportion to car drivers but as they are so much more vulnerable they need to be more aware. For about five years I used to ride a motorbike on the road and it made me far more aware of what other drivers were doing. |

Our next door neigbour drives their kids to school. How far does our neighbour live from the school? 300 metres :stare: |

| 1155674 | 2010-11-23 02:47:00 | Thanks roddy_boy - like it! I've linked to it on our forum... Yep - there are hypocrites everywhere. I don't deny that some cyclists are just like that (and I never have denied it), but there are other road users like that too. Hypocrisy is part of the human condition. |
