1154603 2010-11-20 00:19:00 I know they've been developing an "automatic injection system" for insulin ....
.

Most people don't understand. It isn't the insulin he needs. He takes the insulin. Then he doesn't eat to keep up with it. You see? So it drops. No glucose = same as no oxygen.

They can't fix that short of assigning a minder to follow him around.

Anyway.

9 lives. That was the last life - he's mostly come out of it. He can speak properly now but he still isn't right. he was trying to answer the phone by picking up the remote. He thought his watch was a cellphone. Stuff like that.

The doctor was going to schedule diabetic clinics etc, I told him it's a waste of time, he got that, he was telling them how useless they are and how he knows.

So the doctor said he has to keep his sugar level between 10 and 15, he nearly had a heart attack over that, but the point is he's too old for high sugar to kill him - it takes ages, and he probably won't live long enough for it to become a problem, whereas if he does this again with the low - he probably won't come out of it next time.

So we'll see how that goes.

1154604 2010-11-20 00:36:00 I understand what it's like to have an unwell husband. I really do feel for you.

1154605 2010-11-20 01:25:00 Sorry to hear that, it must be very stressful for you both.

Do you think this has given him a wake-up call, considering how slow he is to recover? If not, what about videoing his behaviour and play it back to him when he has recovered. A bit brutal, but seeing this may make him look after himself better.

Been there, done that.

Discussed a minder with a friend who works for Wai-Trust. We'll see how he goes for a week first.

1154607 2010-11-20 03:37:00 Shiv I hope things improve soon, at least in Auckland he can get decent medical care unlike GoreThis made me laugh. When I lived in Gore many moons ago; the hospital was unofficially called "The Murder House"
The old man almost died there because of their incompetence. I think however it has since been shut down (if not it should be).
Kew Hospital (aka Southland Hospital) in Invercargill was pretty good though.

Sorry to hear about this pctek. When I was younger I had an issue with low blood sugar, and used to black out for short periods of time occasionally. Seems to have disappeared (might have something to do with the bulging waistline me thinks)

1154608 2010-11-20 03:48:00 I am sorry to hear. Very scary for both of you.

Unfortunately, each time I hear of someone being bad at testing their blood/sugar levels, it's been a male. I know one mother who takes her son's levels because he just doesn't think it is important and he's 22! Exactly the same thing happened to him as what has happened with your husband. I'm not sure whether they think they can walk on water or are just plain pig-headed.

Would he actually come around to going to diabetes clinics in light of what has happened?

1154609 2010-11-20 04:05:00 Read my post again pctek .... I said that if they can develop a system for delivering insulin when blood sugar levels are high ... then it possible means they have the technology to provide an automatic systen for delivering glucose should blood sugar levels be too low.

Same thing ... just in reverse

1154610 2010-11-20 04:33:00 So sorry to hear of this PCT

Not quite the same thing, but a ray of hope, a friend of mine (male, late 40's, fit as a buck rat) had a massive 'ruptured artery' based stroke about 8 months back, lost speech, coordination etc, couldn't work, couldn't drive, we though it was all over for him.

He needed speech therapy and other rehab but made an extraordinary recovery, went back to work and recently got his full driver's license back as well.

I sincerely hope you and your husband share similar good fortune.

I did . They don't . Pity . Excellent idea though .

He's seen all the specialists and clinics and nurses and everyone .

The best they could do was put him on the short acting stuff which is supposed to better for lows . A particular sort .

It comes down to self-monitoring really .

1154612 2010-11-20 04:48:00 Shucks pctek, sounds like your hubby's a bit stubborn like my dad. Hope he takes it easy and get better real soon. qazwsxokmijn (102)
