1154371 2010-11-19 00:21:00 The entire of Southland calls vacuuming "luxing". " I luxed the floor".

As for Hrad drives/pcs - do we go to the mechanic and say my gearbox won't start on cold mornings or some such? It's so retarded. I forgive the users, but supposed IT pros???!!!! Should be taken out back and shot.

1154372 2010-11-19 01:16:00 For many people calling it a 'hard drive' is better than calling it 'the big box thing', it feels at least slightly technical.
Come to think of it, I don't actually know what I call my pc box thingy. Certainly not a pc box thingy, but yeah. Probably just 'pc' or 'tower' or something.

1154373 2010-11-19 01:55:00 'Luxing' is a contraction from Electrolux - and old, follows-you tank type vacuum that was better equipped to inhale the dirt and blow it out of the cannister between the wire spool and the fan motor .

We had the dark gray one in the center and my grandmother had the blue one on top .

They were very expensive in the Olden Days . My dad carried his all over town under his arm waiting for the electric company to install wires on the poles .

My grandmother called her Electrolux the Whiz-Bang . This is the same old woman who ran the family cat through the Bendix Washer-wringer . It never meowed again but survived OK otherwise . It was an accident - really!

It's a Computer.

Everything else is a peripheral. Keyboard, mouse, speakers. Whatever.
Or a monitor.

It contains a hard drive. Once they contained modems too.

1154375 2010-11-19 02:17:00 We had a customer buy an 80GB HDD off us via Trademe for $28.

After the courier dropped it off, I got an indignant email from them complaining that they couldn't plug the monitor, keyboard and mouse in because we never supplied the cover (tower, I assumed).

After a really good laugh I cannabilised some faulty machines and sent her a P4 box, OS installed, all ready to go - at no extra charge to her. I never heard from her again.

Hopefully today finds her happy with her $28, P4, 3.0GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 8800GT "hard drive".

Your customer service is second to none.
I would have taken great pleasure in telling her exactly what a moron she was.

1154380 2010-11-19 03:11:00 i HATE it when people call the PC box a HARD DRIVE.

It makes me want to kill them!

Even worse, a few years ago on Outrageous Fortune, a PC box was called a HARD DRIVE. It pissed me off.

Had a tech support call today cause the monitor was not working, I asked if they had checked that the cables were all plugged in. I rushed across town and turn up onsite with a spare lcd and confirmed did you ensure all the cables were plugged in? An older lady told me "yes the screen is plugged into the hard drive"

I smile awkwardly, no point in attempting to correct some people, then after being there for about 30 seconds I find that the lcd power cable is not plugged in correctly.

Sometimes I wished I had the ability to ban people from using technology until the passed a course or something.
