1155573 2010-11-24 06:00:00 Let's start by blaming the Greenies. If you wanted to work on the West Coast there were Mines and Logging. The Greens argued against Logging. They also argue against Mines for that matter. We had to get permission from DOC to cut a track did we not?

There is of course ancillary work.

Much like other small towns I know of.
I suspect that over the next few months you will see the greenies calling for all coal mines to be closed as they are a dangerous work place. They don' really care about people jobs..

1155574 2010-11-24 06:00:00 Would you rather I had said people of low intelligence?

This problem would not have happened had it been an open cast mine.

Which the Greens will not allow given a chance.

If you call everyone who has a different view point to you a moron you will keep getting this.

1155576 2010-11-24 06:12:00 Think there's little to gain from playing the blame game .... our family is thinking of the families and friends who have lost someone close .... unfortunately underground activity has inherent dangers but this event has affected most Kiwi's in one way or another.

Our thoughts are with the "Coast" community and all who have been associated with the rescue and hopefully the recovery operation.

There will be a detailed enquiry into the reasons for the event and hopefully this will bring about improved safety in mining operations throughout NZ.

Again, as a family, our hearts go out to everyone who has had to deal with the stresses of the last 5 days.

1155578 2010-11-24 07:22:00 You can't blame the media reporting that rescue teams had been sent in - the Mayor of Grey District, was filmed by TV1 stating it as a fact, and repeating that he had been told by old timers that this was the best time to do it. You can't trust politicians to tell the truth even on the simplest of things.

We SHOULD blame the media.

It is their continual parading of "experts" not involved in the process, their presumptive reporting and the fact they are spreading "news" that they haven't even confirmed yet that causes all of the confusion and angst around the country.

What you hear and see is what the media WANT you to hear and see, which is sometimes far removed from the truth. Generally the truth doesn't get viewer ratings or sell papers.

People just lap up whatever they are told - apt that we are often known as a country for our sheep population!

1155579 2010-11-24 07:48:00 Well, whatever. And normally I would agree with you. However, in this instance Kokshorn (sp? the Mayor of the Grey District) was involved in the whole sorry series of events, and the media were entitled to film him making those statements in the middle of a long and somewhat maudlin and rambling interview. Having done that, they should of course have checked the veracity of what he said, and they did and ran retractions, pointing out he was in error. John H (8)
1155580 2010-11-24 09:37:00 I've just got home.
I left home at 2.30 and things were looking up.
Turned the tv on at 5 to be greeted with the very sad news.
And now I've just got home.

All I can say at this stage is that I feel very sorry for those miners and all of their families. Such a loss of good men.

"Before the West Coast tragedy, New Zealand had seen its share of mine disasters, with 181 people killed since 1896."

Compare that to our road toll....
