1155563 2010-11-24 05:04:00 They won't send anyone until the gas levels are safe, and if that never happens then that will be their tomb.

No one, no matter how "old timer" they are knows when the next explosion may happen, and if that had happened with a rescue team inside then they would be dead as well.

1155564 2010-11-24 05:16:00 You can't blame the media reporting that rescue teams had been sent in - the Mayor of Grey District, was filmed by TV1 stating it as a fact, and repeating that he had been told by old timers that this was the best time to do it. You can't trust politicians to tell the truth even on the simplest of things. John H (8)
1155565 2010-11-24 05:25:00 Seems the original media report was wrong -- no ones been sent in after all.

Correct. The mayor of Greymouth said that the recovery team went in the mine - but he was wrong.

It seems to me that no one will enter the mine for a long long time. The toxic gases appear to be generated in some way, probably by burning coal inside the mine.

If they are sending in 'rescue workers' (not that there'll be anything left to rescue) now, then that is, IMO, one massive **** up. When asked why they were being sent in now, he replied; "I don't know". What the ****? If it is true, that they are being sent in now, then whoever made the call to not go in immediately after the first blast ought to be held accountable, they could well have blood on their hands.

I tried to remain fairly neutral on this - I know that they don't release all the information, for good reason, but it seems clear as day. If you can won't send in people after the initial blast, why now, when they're actually quite sure that they're dead.

I just lost a lot of faith in that cop.

It's an incorrect report by the Greymouth Mayor.

1155569 2010-11-24 05:52:00 At least you don't make it personal ...
Calling people morons isn't personal?

1155570 2010-11-24 05:55:00 Let's start by blaming the Greenies. If you wanted to work on the West Coast there were Mines and Logging. The Greens argued against Logging. They also argue against Mines for that matter. We had to get permission from DOC to cut a track did we not?

There is of course ancillary work.

Much like other small towns I know of.

1155571 2010-11-24 05:55:00 Would you rather I had said people of low intelligence?

This problem would not have happened had it been an open cast mine.

I was being sarcastic. I should have looked for a suitable smiley.
