1155515 2010-11-23 21:54:00 Has anyone asked the 60 real rescuers that are waiting for the word to go, if they would like to go in now?

I don't call the guys in the briefing room "rescuers". I would call them OSH manual readers.

1155516 2010-11-23 22:00:00 Latest headline reads: "Robot finds miner's hat with light still on"

What the hell does that mean?

The batteries aren't flat as we have been told they would be?

Someone had just switched the light on?

The light was caused by the reflection of the robot's light?

The media misunderstood the comment?

Aliens are living down the mine?

Come on Digby, fill us in...................

Well as a world expert on mining helmet batteries I think its good news.

It means if the miners are still alive, they might have some light.

But I would be happier if I knew that there were stores of food on the coal face area. It seems that the worlds mining safety "experts" don't think a store of food is needed in today's modern mining world. A few boxes of canned food would not cost much along with some bottled water.

The Chilean miners were down to their last can of tuna after 17 days.

Please remember that Mr Plod as you disrespectfully call him is not making decisions alone .

Well he did stick his chest out initially and announce he was in charge and he had forbidden anyone entering the mine .

Unfortunately, unnoticed by some, the Police Force has become the “Uniformed Branch of the IRD” .

This observation is evidenced by them some time ago prohibiting the ambulance guys attending a shooting victim, digging up the back yard of a property looking for a body when it was in the boot of the suspects car parked outside the murder scene (and clearly sign written), and being unable to locate the murder weapon of person stabbed in the street . The murder weapon was found in the Rubbish Bin closest to the Murder scene by the dustman emptying the rubbish bins .

I mean fair go, is it any wonder I lack confidence?

I could go on about personal experiences but the thread isn’t about the Police Force .

Remember the Australian Explosive Expert also said, “The Police are the wrong people to be running this sort of operation” .

I’m picking when all this is over there will be an enquiry that will have all our hair stand on end . :(

1155520 2010-11-23 23:04:00 As for the video of the gas venting during the explosion - I was quite unimpressed.....

Given all the channels down at the face that allow room for the air to move and expand, softening the blow at all but the site of the blast - I can't see why some groups shouldn't have been able to survive and evac themselves.

Unimpressed eh? Fair enough. I was horrified. :( The blast from the tunnel lasted 52 seconds and originated 2km away. That is a huge amount of energy to continue for nearly a minute and show up at a large distance.

I do agree that initial survival is possible. Beyond that because the air is poisoned, these men could only cling on if they have oxygen and water.

In hindsight, an immediate rescue attempt after the explosion might have been the right decision. At that stage most of the gas would have been burnt out.

It is important to remember there are remarkable examples of miners surviving disasters so let us hope a miracle happens.

1155521 2010-11-23 23:08:00 "Boorish" journalst infuriates

Energy Minster Gerry Brownlee has blasted a "boorish" Australian journalist covering the Pike River mining disaster .

Ean Higgins, from The Australian, has been infuriating media at twice daily press conferences held by police and the mine rescue team .

Today Higgins drew gasps from other journalists when he asked why Superintendent Gary Knowles was heading the rescue operation instead of a mining union .

"Why is it the local country cop doing it?" he said .

Knowles, who called Higgins 'sir', responded: "Where do I start . I'm not going to answer the last part of your question, I'm the district commander . I have responsibility for policing three quarters of the South Island . "

"This is a multi-agency approach . . . this is not a union matter, sir, it's matter for the experts . "

Mr Brownlee said he had every confidence in the men leading the team, saying they had a very hard job . He said Higgins was one of those 'typewriter interviewers . " And he said the paper's editor should be called to account .

"I think it's very easy to be a critic . The particular journalist that asked the most offensive question, the simple fact is he should not be reporting for a country like this because Australia has been so good to us .

"Australia are so focused on us, their prayers and their best wishes to all involved and they get some utter tosspot like that over here who mars all them .

"We know he's not representative of Australians . "

He said the newspaper needed to be named .

"Their editor needs to give some explanation of why they've sent such a boorish fellow to this sensitive situation . "

The Australian today reported rescuers believed four men had survived the blast . This is incorrect, Knowles told the press conference . "'We don't know where the miners are . . . and a lot of these comments from you guys are not helpful because they are distressing for the families . "

Another reporter from Australian television station Channel Seven asked: "Can you imagine New York firefighters standing around the World Trade Centre waiting to be told they shouldn't be told go in if there were lives in the balance . "

Chief Executive of Pike River Coal Peter Whittall said "That's an inappropriate question to ask me, and I'm not going to comment . . . my guys underground, I'm not going to answer a question like that . "

1155522 2010-11-23 23:23:00 The possibility that no mine or rescue teams will ever enter the West Coast mine where 29 men remain trapped is being considered by authorities.

Really? Are you serious?

Holding to hope that there are still alive people down there, are they really going to sit back and just condemn them to a slow death of starvation/dehydration/exhaustion?

I really hope the person who makes that decision never sleeps again in his life without being tormented with nightmares of slow death.
